Question
What are you listening right now?
I’m listening to vampire weekend, what’s in your ipod, or car stereo?
Answers
I’m shuffling my iTunes library right now, so it’s very mixed and just went from “Here comes your man” by Pixies to “Americanos” by Holly Johnson…..who know’s what’s next!
Itunes on random, Just listened to a song by Plastic Tree. Now it’s, Freaky Thangs by Ludacris.
Weird.
Now, I got some Jay-Z Bumpin’
I’m making myself listen to iTunes on shuffle until I hear one specific song:
“You’re the voice” by John Farhnam
Out of boredom I guess
I’ve been doing this for almost two weeks and it hasn’t come up once.
Now, it’s just to see if it ever will.
Also, I get to hear a lot of stuff I don’t really listen to that much, or haven’t listened to.
I’m listening to a samba/bossa nova station on Pandora. Right now, it’s
Y Danca Da Solidao – Marisa Monte
“hang me up to dry” by the cold war kids, but I was just listening to “cashmir pulaski day” by sulfjan stevens! Both songs are great!
My friend teaches first grade and always describes her occupation to others as “hot for teacher,” she’s pretty smokin’ too.
@peedub you cant use the rickroll link two times in a row. Im starting to remember the URLs for them.
Im investing some big money on Ratatat in iTunes. Those songs were all awesome, especially the last one.
My husband is tapping on his chair with his fingers and playing Norah Jones on his
iMac. Oh now he’s turning on Jon Stewart…
I’m listening to Gnarls Barkley’s latest album, The Odd Couple! It is simply amazing! If you haven’t listened to it yet and liked his first album, St. Elsewhere, I’d suggest you check it out ASAP. Heck, even if you’ve never even heard of Gnarls Barkley, I’d still urge you to find and buy BOTH if his albums! ...and then listen to then of course ; )
I’m always slow to embrace new music. I’m one of those people who will leave the same CD in the car for a month, or until my wife says she can’t find it. But. I’m going to try hard and listen to a few suggestions here.
probably boring and tacky but…...living on a prayer (since I’ve just sat the last exam of the year and I’m “halfway there” on my course – whoo hoo)
peedub, I hope that wasnt another rickroll. Didn’t get me bc its not formatted for the iPhone yet. I will never ever click a link from you again =P
You’re having a good day. School will be out and you’re gonna break 1000. What are your going to do Miss Wildflower [microphone in your face]?
well, I’m gonna have some quiet reflection (in a glass of something) and think about how lurved I am…..and not forgetting the little people….blah….blah….blah [swoosh hair to the side]
Ahhh so you tried the muppet rickroll… I’ve already had that one. And über, what was that dude smoking?
@Eambos from the looks of it, id say he had acid. You can see the couch melting at around 2min plus talking fish and plenty of fractals.
Any of you have a “commuter mix” that you’ve cooked up? I have one that I spent weeks tweaking to get just right, and listen to it each morning as I make my way on the bus.
@birdlegleft i usually make a playlist and listen the hell out of it. Where ever i go im listening to it and i will do this for weeks. Then ill make a new one and not listen to any of the songs on the old playlist for months.lol the cycle continues.
For me it’s all about podcasts, as far as commuter mixes go. Tim Sweeny’s Beats in Space is by far the best I’ve heard, but I’m into some pretty obnoxious electro stuff.
I’m going to piggyback another question into the fold: do people still listen to albums? Or is that a forgotten craft?
Vinyl? Hell YES!
or do you mean albums in their entirity? I do both. I still love the idea of a cohesive album but also am a fan the the 12” single and the remix.
Uber, you have awesome taste in music! Everything you’ve suggested so far i have loved.
And I love Vinyl too! I have the record player in my room with a stack of 120+ albums in some crates right next to it.
Safe? You can go through iTunes and type in Beats in Space. It’s free, too, and this amazing DJ provides a tracklist, who does this?
I didn’t actually mean vinyl (although I have my share of 180 gram goodness). I meant the form. A collection of songs meant to be listened to in one sitting. End to end.
I still like the whole album idea.
I’ve never purchased just a song from iTunes, I only buy full albums.
Usually I listen to the complete album before I listen to the songs individually. An entire album can send a different message and feeling than just one song on its own.
@eambos, our turntable is now public property. Meaning my children are able to use it. You can imagine the condition it’s in.
I think albums are gteat too. Hearing a song in context is pretty nice. I also have a shit load of random downloads. Have to fill out those mixes with something.
i dont do cds, albums, or whatever. I pirate everything. I know tis bad but i go to as many concerts as i can so i support my muzik that way.
I think at least half my iTunes library was acquired as late night impulse purchases…....I actually can’t remember the last physical record I bought….
Im not big on the CDs anymore. It seems itunes usually has the cheaper price for an album than any store i can think of. Ive spent almost $250 on itunes!
It’s the end all. Tim Sweeny is affiliated with DFA, if that means anything to you.
I just got my hands on some Datarock, I’m diggin’ it.
The grey album was made by Danger Mouse who is in Gnarls Barkley with Cee-Lo Green. The album actually caused a lot of controversy
“The album, which Danger Mouse released in limited quantities to a few outlets, created a massive amount of controversy when EMI, copyright holder of The Beatles, ordered Danger Mouse and retailers carrying the album to cease distribution. The amount of attention The Grey Album received caused EMI to act. Danger Mouse never asked permission to use The Beatles’ material, and intended to produce a limited production run of 3,000 copies.”
You should start collecting money from some of these artists. Ive spent at least $20 on the stuff that you’ve posted in the last day or two.
Since ‘now’ is a kinds relative term…..this could go on for some time….right now I’ve got Eagles playing (anyone else noticed they seem to have dropped the ‘The’?)
This question is awesome! I’ve gotten so many new bands to add to my iPod. I’m listening to some Beatles “Abby Road” album right now.
Mmmmm, I’ve got some Z Trip. Not on vinyl though.
This morning is bus mix. “Killing the Blues” followed by “Waiting for Superman.”
I saw him live at Irving Plaza in Manhatten. Its a really small venue, but many other people, such as public enemy(who I saw), have performed there.
I saw Public Enemy touring for “Fear of a Black Planet.” Totally amazing show despite a shaky stage which caused problems for Terminator X. Chuck D still has my favorite rap voice, and Flava Fav is the quintesential hype man.
“Midnite Vultures” which was missing in action for the last two years in the trunk of the car, then “Our Beloved Revoltionary Sweetheart.”
“Hickory Dickory Dock” and other classics such as “Im a Little Teapot” and “Hot Crossed Buns.”
But really, I’m just enjoying the silence.
Foo Fighters rock!!
But I’m in Coulton mode…....Ikea playing now. Gotta love songs about a handfull of norsemen :)
Bits and pieces of over-heard conversations at the coffee shop I’m hanging’ at. Deciding if I’ll hear something “juicy,” or just go ahead and listen to the Decemberists instead.
Decided on “Five Tango Sensations” instead. A collaboration between Kronos Quartet and the legendary Astor Piazolla. This might possibly be the most beatiful music in the world.
Nooo!!! Peedub why!!!! You stole my thunder!!! I’m listening to eye of the tiger to commemorate such an amazing feat!
Now what is there to do… I’ve been so caught up in this thread for the last 2 days that now I’m bored =P
Good Charlotte – Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous (confession time…..I do enjoy emo music. Great start to a Friday ;) )
@Wild- where can I access a list of how to make characters such as the one above? Can I even do this on a basic MacBook?
yes you can: Sys. prefs -> international -> keyboard and choose Norwegian, Danish, Swedish…..maybe a good idea to also choose keyboard viewer so you can see which keys are where.
Redneck Girl – Bellamy Brothers…....where did that come from??
oh well, changed to Alive and Kicking – Simple Minds
While I wait for Audioslave to finish downloading…......AC/DC – Back in Black
I got inspired: http://www.fluther.com/disc/12152/trailer-music-ironman/
I’m totally going country now, so Garth Brooks – Friends in low places.
btw, anyone else find it annoying when this thread is the last alert and you have to scroll all the way back up?
@wild- yes, and does your smart scroll run out occasionally? I hate it when that happens. Did you end up purchasing it?
yup it does – purchase what?
@ uberbatman: iTunes says Alternative, but I defo sense some country/progressive rock influences
@wildflower just hit the home button on your keyboard ;)
yea ive seen it listed as alternative but i dont really agree with that. They just seem to be one of those bands that are hard to label, like muse
oh….well, I’m using company provided macbook pro :)
Don’t have it on my personal one (iBook G4 – which is mostly just DVD player now)
and, I know I’m gonna sound so ridiculously uninformed now (what else is new), but, home button?
I think that was just me doing a pick’n’mix response…
oh, and to stay on topic: I feel fantastic
Ooh, 2 good bands come up while I’m gone- muse and audioslave.
The Raconteurs: “Salute your solution” is whatd playing for me.
wildflower that song was fantastic^_^
I love how epic this songs intro is.
it’s ominous! – and the image doesn’t take away from it :)
if you liked that one, you’ll love this
I couldnt figure out why i knew Jonathan Coulton it just hit me. Portal.
Anyone else hear the new NIN cd Ghosts I-IV its actually quite cool id recommend checking it out even if y NIN isnt normally your thing
umm…..no idea what that Portal is all about? Discovered him through my other half…..given the WoW connection and all…
and the NIN I can’t escape, in fact had that very thing playing in the car this morning :)
The NIN was awesome, and I like tha tversion of the portals song more than the original. It has a very different feel when played on guitar and sung.
Im too mainstream… Everyone has all these awesome bands that I dont know of while I say things everyone has heard.
Here’s a stumper: Z-trip feat. Busdriver “take two copies”
I try and stay away from mainstream music ^_^. But still i dont know that many awesome unheard of bands.
Well, this is unknown…...make of it what you will, but I like it…..and if you understand Swedish, the lyrics are quite meaningful..
Björn Afzelius – Ikaros
OK, time for something a bit more rock-ish…...Breeders – Huffer (I used to think she said tub and tumble)
Have the whole album, but can’t find them on YouTube…..hang on…
here ya go: http://www.myspace.com/200baby
Ringing in my ears. My boys (8 and 10) just finished up their second band practice. Paired down to the essentials; drums and electric guitar.
Which reminds me. Anyone remember the Spinanes? Going to dig the CD out now.
Cooking By the Book is so much better than You Are A Pirate
lol…..that’ll get your attention alright.
Aretha Franklin playing here (morning music)
this song is almost as good as this video
http://youtube.com/watch?v=dCRoiQ-S7po
yes Clap, clap clap!
Would you like some C.R.E.A.M. with that coffee?
Yes, i know im on a tiny Wu- tang addiction…
Eambos, the Dr. Evil version without a doubt :)
....and listening to Penelope Houston – Grand Prix (can’t find it on youtube)
If not driving if peedub is also going to be on the road… I dont want his car “frolicking” into mine.
lol….yea, having someone ‘frolicking’ in to your car ain’t fun…..I should know, mine’s apparently BER (beyond economical repair).
But….back on track, I’m on Bruce Springsteen’s latest album…..You’ll be Comin’ Down
He’s still making music? I didn’t know that. I can’t believe barry manilow is still performing. Ewwww… I’ve got the radio on 92.3 KROCK is the best station for eastern new york!
@Eambos i love wu tang clan they just came here a couple days ago but i couldnt go to the concert because it was 21 and over :(
Buy the tickets online and you can get in. I’m not 21 and I’ve gone to at least 5 age 21+ concerts. The restriction is just because the venue sells alcohol. When I saw public enemy and z-trip (2 separate concerts) at Irving Plaza in NYC there was an age limit. There was a bar in the back, but you need a liscense or other id just to get a bracelet to buy alcohol.
Just buy online and youre in!
Oh yeah, Who took ODB’s place at that concert?
Nah house of blues in AC is really hardcore about carding concert passed now anyway. I dont believe anyone took his place he just well obviously wasnt there.
The Good rats. They’re a local band from long island in the 70s and 80s that never made it big, but were awesome!
Too bad I wasnt alive when they were around. All I’ve got is some vinyl of em.
haha…..I have that record somewhere. Joey Tempest was cute :)
but now I’m on Best You Can Get – Veruca Salt
Good choice!
I’ve gone a bit more retro and psychedelic for now: Somebody to Love – Jefferson Airplane
Found a fucked remix instead. Seether + Freak Like Me = not really my thing. Followed it up with “The Beautiful People.”
now that’s not really my thing….....yes, confession time, I don’t care much for Manson.
I’m continuing my retro streak…......Son of a Preacherman – Dusty
Seriously don’t know where this came from…...but apparently it’s in my iTunes…
Did peedub supply the heads for that video?
.....and now I’m reviving 80’s rock: Joan Jett – Play that song again
@wildflower, that song is my Manson guilty pleasure. Just can’t resist it really.
Now getting my fix of “This American Life.”
Cmon wild, why that LP song? Linkin park is one of my favorite bands, but I can’t stand the singles anymore. I like the secret demos and such that I have by them. One’s called “QWERTY” and they only perform it at concerts occasionally. Another one is “Reading my Eyes.” I love the obsure stuff.
meh, morning grumpiness influences my music picks, what can I say…..
I’m going full on 80’s today: Twisted Sister – We’re not gonna take it…....(I’m so dressing up like Dee Snyder next halloween)
Matmos
Sounds awesome, mole and all?
http://www.21stcenturypaladin.com/pics/2005/06/il_dee.jpg
Not if I paint my face first =P or maybe I’ll go as gene simmons, the horniest, greediest rocker alive.
@peedub
Of course! – I’ll have to get hold of a giant bone too….
@eambos
[remark about Gene Simmons’ tongue removed by concience]
Anyways, back to ABBA – Does your mother know
Sound of water boiling in the pot while I wait to make that first cup of morning coffee. Also, snoring from down the hall. Not sure if it’s child or dog. Could possibly be both.
Is that the original or is it using a sample like Lupe Fiasco did? Awesome song, btw. I like it more than Lupe sampling it.
aww man, we’ve been beaten! I’ll still post here though =)
Busta Rhymes feat. Linkin Park-“We Made It”
oh well…...but then, most of the people on this thread were on the other one too….
Pretenders – Don’t Get Me Wrong
It’s not halloween yet…...besides, I’ll need time to get my hair that length…...or d’you mean how the song goes? The video for it rocks!
I love that dedication. Last year my ex and I were Hells Angels. I grew a semi long beard out just that, well kind of.
I’m terribly sorry, it’s actually “Iron Tusk.” Mastodon covering Fleetwood Mac would be more than a little frightening.
haha….it ran out 14 hours ago :)
And now I’m puttering with making my muxtape (I’m such a copycat, I know)
wow I just came back from cabo, and I this thread is in fire! hehe 327, well I’m listening to the wombats
A bit opposite to the time of day, but this just gets me in a great mood on a bank holiday Monday morning at work (yes I’m fishing for sympathy!)

The latest Steve Earle album. Not my favorite, but it’s a pretty decent record. And, I’ve been a fan of his production aesthetics since “I Feel Alright.” I also like the fact that he can intro new themes into the “Alt Country” genre.
Nope. Not “Valerie.” “Rehab” and one other one that’s pretty funky.
I didn’t really know much about her (and still don’t) until I saw her on the Grammy Awards this year. I think she’s a pretty fabulous performer. And I like all that raw energy.
She’s pretty cool…..and very rock’n’roll!
Ah, coffee and Bon Jovi (Any other day). This is how to wake up :)
Does she still make music – or does she just judge people now?
Eagles- Too busy being fabulous (my theme for the day!)
Wow, can’t believe I’d forgotten that song…..“is it the rumor, that another boy wants to take your place….”
...yup, I know the words.
Back to Steve Earle. I think this is the record he released after getting out of jail—I Feel Alright. If you wanted an introduction to his music this would be as good a place as any to start.
Eve of Destruction – Barry McGuire…...there’s just something about a sunny day that makes me feel a bit hippy…
“Ransom,” by Haley Bonar. I wish I had some Dosh on here though. Anyone outside of Minneapolis familiar with mister one-man band himself?
This is getting me ready to enjoy the first day of my vacation :)
I couldn’t resist. I downloaded “Time to Pretend” by mgmt, and listened to it a hal dozen times on repeat. Catchy, and oddly familiar.
2Unlimited just came up in my iTunes – arguably the most negative song ever made
