If your house was on fire and you could only save 3 things (excluding pets and people, they make it out safely) what would you save and why?

My computer, my clothes and my tv. Its really the only assets I have. (poor college student)

1. The accordion file folder (with handle) I have which contains important papers (insurance policies, birth certificate, marriage license, etc.) that I always keep on the direct route from the bed to the door, for exactly this reason.

2. The box of old family photos that is currently on the couch near the back door anyway, as I’m in the process of scanning them in to share with relatives.

3. The external hard drive that I use to backup everything on the internal hard drive, since I’m unlikely to take time in a fire to dig the internal one out.

Edited to add: why? Because most of these are very hard or impossible to replace, they are small/portable, and valuable (at least to me).

Here’s a related one.

My computer, the safe that has several CD discs of pictures on them & all our important papers, & (this has to count as one) my 3 antique clocks that were my dad’s & grandparents’ clocks. They all work & chime perfectly.

Oh wait, scratch the safe. It’s fireproof. My clothes, I guess.

mrswho's avatar

@Jeruba Thanks, I looked for related ones and couldn’t find that one. Sorry for a similar question.

Well everything I need is in a fireproof safe, so I would likely just walk out of the house and get my stuff later, but for the fun of the question, my external hard drive, my wallet, and if my car is in the garage I suppose my car, if not then some extra clothes.

Junior Asparagus, my daughter’s favorite toy, life is not the same without it for her. My Bible, I know I could get a new one, but I’ve written in it and I couldn’t get that back. And my dad’s wedding band, he died 7 years ago and my mom gave it to me, it’s special for me, they had a great marriage and it symbolizes what a marriage should look like to me.

My Macbook, Kindle, and iPhone. Wait . . . if they get burned up in the fire, won’t I be able to get newer versions of them? If so, let ‘em burn! Macbook Pro, Kindle 2, and iPhone 3G here I come.

I’m sorry I’m so totally materialistic. I should be saving sentimental things.

This exact question has been asked hundreds of times.

mrswho's avatar

@asmonet I looked for it under fire, save, and things, and couldn’t really figure out a better way to search. Sorry for posting one that’s already been posted.

Nah, it’s cool. After a month or so, you’ll start seeing questions pop up over and over again. Dunno why I even bothered mentioning it. :)

I would grab my sketchbooks. You won’t let me take everything else I would have said.

Even though it’s fireproof, I’m grabbing the safe – it has a all necessary papers in it, some photos and some cash. The box with the external drives in it, they have everything to keep our businesses going on them, scanned photos and contact info. My great great great grandmother’s quilt. It cannot be replaced.

Keys
Wallet
Cell Phone

Though, I am liking the idea of having a ready to go external hard drive with backups of music, photos, email, contact numbers, images, scans…

Nothing besides family and dog matter to me. Insurance covers most and photos are embeded in memory forever. Life is first I will get better material stuff after the fire

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@gooch I admire your attitude. You obviously don’t let material things rule your life.

My baby blanket and cabbage patch doll…at 22 it’s still hard to sleep without them. My scrapbook (it took me FOREVER to create and means a lot to me). Other than that, I could replace most anything else.

My purse (with cellphone, wallet, ID’s, keys and stuff)
My beloved computer
and
My PS2 memorycards…

1) My ”system” on my nightstand
2) My banjo
3) My great grandfather’s fedora (sentimental value)

fireside's avatar

@Baloo72 – lol, you turned all three of mine into one by calling it a system, good show

Baloo72's avatar

@fireside hehe, necessary to add the banjo to the list

My pictures, journals and my stuffed bear Fatso, who I’ve had since I was five.

I like the whole take anything with an apple logo on it  :P

but really, i would take my phone that has all my contacts, and my 500GB Time Machine back up disk. So when i get a new computer, ill restore it from that hard drive as if nothing ever happened.

Strauss's avatar

1. Important papers
2. Collection of family photos not backed up digitally
3. Digital backup (external hard drive)

I already have a lot of my digital info backed up on the thumb drive I carry on my keychain

Everything else can be replaced—except vintage collectible musical instruments.
