In your opinion, what is the most beautiful instrument?

Asked by leopardgecko123 (777points) August 2nd, 2011

What instrument do you think has the most beautiful sound?
I would have to choose the violin. I play it, but if you listen to a lot of movie soundtracks such as Harry Potter and Narnia, the use a lot of the violin family in it and it makes it sound amazing. It has a light, sweet sound and can be played many different ways.
What do you think?

The French horn is lovely, and always makes me think of Christmastime.

I think they all have their unique beauty. I love the harp too, ooooh that soothing sound.

It’s too hard to choose….but the double bass is one of my favorites :)

Most beautiful? Flute

Most sexy? Alto Sax playing some blues

Also going with harp.

I’m voting harp too, but I do like the flute, the violin and the uillean pipes.

Piano for acoustic instruments and Electric violin for electronic instruments

Cello on number 1, closely followed by Brian May’s guitar.
Let me guess, @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard is going to answer Fiddle.

I’m biased towards guitar, since I’ve played it for so long.

I can’t quantify the beauty of one instrument over another though… they all have their strengths and roles in my mind.

I think harps look the prettiest. As for sound..? An orchestra.

Cello. The sound is deep and -smoky? and it sort of reminds me of red wine.

Guitar. Taylor acoustic with new strings. That or a vibraslap.

Oooh, there are so many!
The piano is a favourite, flutes, harps and violins too.

The mournful sound of a well-played oboe can make me weep instantly.

The human voice.

Cello. I play it and I can’t get enough of it’s deep, sexy sound.

I love the sound of the violin and piano.

No question about it: trumpet. I heard it played in third grade and have been hooked every since. God. My chest gets filled with that sound just thinking about it! It sweeps me away like no other sound. I get chills. It is utterly magnificent!

The Sax is the sexiest, but I think for beauty, I would have to go with the piano. it probably has the ability to make me cry the most.

mcsnazzy's avatar

I like the sound of the clarinet and the harp.

The bari sax to me has low melodic voice that doesn’t yell or scream.
But I also love the oboe and bassoon. There’s something about them that’s mysterious.

Neurotic_David's avatar

The English Horn is by far the most beautiful instrument in the orchestra, to my ears.

Violin

I love the sound of a fine guitar but a great cello or double-bass masterfully played can bring me to joyful tears. Yo-Yo Ma on the cello – for example.

josie's avatar

Guitar. As in Andre Segovia or Stephane Grapelli

Sunny2's avatar

I like the nasal sound of the oboe, “the ill wind that no one blows good.”
I don’t know who said that except Danny Kaye, but it may not have been original with him.
I like a lot of other instruments too, but I always notice the oboe.

Drums. Mainly, because of their past history helping people to communicate with each other.

Also, what would rock and roll be like with a sold beat of the drum? No where….......

I think the harp is the most soothing instrument, but the Saxophone is the most expressive.

@Rarebear banjos are awesome and I hate that people instantly think “hurr durr hillbillies” when they see them. I’m getting ready to buy one myself.

Check out Bela Fleck.

Brian1946's avatar

Because of its celestial resonance, I choose the electric 12-string guitar.

Blueroses's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Bela Fleck is the banjo God!

Rarebear's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I know Bela well. I’ve been playing bluegrass banjo for nearly 20 years.

I think a tenor saxophone is the sexiest, but for beauty I choose the classical flute.

I can’t choose just one so I have to say I love clarinet too because to me it is the closest in sound and feeling to the human voice. It can be so sad and mournful or bright happy and like the sound of laughter.

And I must have piano! This Keith Jarrett song is so beautiful. Listen to the entire song. This link is only Part 1.

Ok, I know this is not like picking a favorite but my songs illustrate to me just how special each instrument is and why I cannot choose just one!
I simply cannot leave out guitar.

You know, I think the beauty of an instrument comes nor from the instrument, but from the soul of the player.

dabbler's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Great Bela Fleck link !

I can’t think of any instrument that grabs me by the neurons more than a violin well played with the Bach Sonatas and Partittas. I think it’s the double-string passages that topple me most.
