Is there a way to de-scale stainless steel that has had regular (not distilled) water?

I have a home humidifier with a stainless steel tank. It called for distilled water but I have been using tap water; as a result there is scaling or mineral buildup at the bottom of the tank. I have run it through the dishwasher but no improvement.
What advice do you have to unscale or clean the tank?
