NSFW Does having a high sex drive mean you are healthy?

Asked by partyrock (3870points) March 11th, 2012

Does having a high sex drive mean you are healthy or more fertile? I know there are plenty of people who can’t have children but still have a high sex drive.

So if someone has this drive, does it just mean there bodies are working properly and healthy?

I just realized probably a question that doesn’t make sense since a lot of people are sick, addicted to drugs, but still have lots of sex. Never mind. Anyone know what I’m trying to ask?

Is it a question of psychological health you’re referring to?

I have heard a low sex drive means you may be low on certain hormones. I high sex drive could be the opposite to this. I don’t think that it means your not healthy but it may mean the hormone levels might be off which hinders reproduction since the whole reproductive system needs the hormone levels to be at the right amounts in order for conception to become possible.

A high sex drive is indicative of high hormone production.

Also it is indicative of the fact that the person likes sex.

A high sex drive to me indicates that person has a great self image and has discovered that sex is an amazing part of being a human being. A high sex drive is IMO also evidence that person is healthy, exercises, practices good hygiene and has a partner who they can share these moments of great pleasure with and supplement them with private moments of self pleasure as well. In my experience fertility as little to do with it and more to do with having a caring partner who knows how to make you feel special, desired and loved and not just a sperm recepticle.

No. You can still have tons of illnesses and conditions and be crazy horny.

I think the two are unrelated, although a good sex drive (neither too low nor too high) might mean you’re more likely to be mentally/emotionally healthy.

Such a conclusion can’t be made. There are hundreds of diseases and health troubles that do not affect people’s sex drive at all. The following statement seems more valid

If you are healthy you have a normal sex drive (the range of normal is quite large actually in this case).

Especially if you are 85!

All bananas are fruits but not all fruits are bananas, aka if you’re healthy you probably have a higher sex drive, but just because you have a high sex drive doesn’t mean you’re healthy.

Being able to maintain an erection indefinitely must mean you have great blood circulation, that’s me fighting fit then.

I like to think so :-)

I think so. Having a high sex drive means you are in good physical shape. Most people who are sick or out of shape don’t participate in sex as much as healthy people, nor do they enjoy it as much (eg., fat people). A high sex drive also means you got a very active functioning level of testosterone, or a healthy level (or perhaps high level) of testosterone.

wundayatta's avatar

I think @SpeedskaterMan has it. If you have a high sex drive, it is very likely due to having high testosterone levels. That doesn’t mean you are healthy physically or psychologically.

MollyMcGuire's avatar

It just mean you have a high sex drive. You might also have a terminal illness.

SpeedskaterMan's avatar

@wundayatta I notice personally that when I train for speedskating, and exercise my body with weights to increase muscle mass, the testosterone seems to increase at the same time, and I personally feel and see the effects, especially in the mornings.

@SpeedskaterMan Interesting. I wonder if it could have a seasonal effect—since people are more active in the spring (as are most mammals)—maybe testosterone levels go up in the spring and guys might be a bit hornier. Just a question. I can’t say I follow that pattern, but others might.
