Spike in carbon-14 levels in tree rings indicates a massive cosmic event - So what happened in the year 775?

Here’s an article about an amazing puzzle which seems to have happened about 1200 years ago:

Could this have resulted in world-wide misery? And explain the gap between Greek science & Roman engineering and the Golden Islamic age & the Age of Enlightenment? I.e. being the root cause of parts of the Dark Ages?
