How can my daughter stay on a "liquid diet" but still get enough to eat so she isn't "starving" all the time?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46814points) May 31st, 2013

The Dr. said my daughter can have only liquids to eat between now and Wednesday, when she has her gall bladder surgery. My poor daughter is going nuts. She’ll eat a bowl of soup…and be “starving” again in 20 minutes. She doesn’t see how she can make it.

She’s not to have any fat, sugar or salt either.

You guys have any suggestions for us?

Can she puree and then strain fruits like peaches or berries or pears or apples?

Can she do the same with veggies? Juice and then strain? Is any kind of fiber also bad?

Can she water down baby food, like strained chicken or beef?

I don’t see why not…I’ll ask her.

No fibre. She already has diarrhea she says.

No sugar…. Your doctor meant no added sugar, right? Because… she would be starving without some source of carbohydrate. Pureed fruit sounds like a possibility, as well as applesauce (you can find it without extra sugar added).

If she’s not allowed to have fat or salt, how could she have baby food made of meat, or soup for that matter? Both will almost certainly contain some fat and salt.

PS: I don’t see how she could not have diarrhea on such a diet. But fiber, if you can figure out a way to get her some, will help keep her from feeling hungry every 20 minutes.

I thought of that too @bookish1. I have some awesome left over roast in freezer. It simmered with veggies alllll day, and the juice is a food group unto itself. I put a little salt in, but not much. But…fat.

A did a little googling and some people report drinking protein or slim-fast shakes. She might want to talk to her doctor before the end of the work day today to clarify what she can drink.

6 days is a LONG time. Yuck.

Chia seeds are insoluble fiber so they might change the nature of diaharea and make it better worth a shot.

Everything I put into my juices is fiber though so I am brain dead on this one.

I know. I am too. I mean, no salt, no sugar, no fat, no fibre takes away almost everything.

Like @Cupcake I’d check out some of the protein shakes about. Some taste like crap but others are okay. Check with her doctor and read the label carefully but protein will help her feel fuller for longer.

Smoothies? You could even get some green veg in there for fibre, if you’re determined.

I agree with @bookish1… She should have more fibre if she’s got diarrhea.

Ensure mixed with melted vanilla ice cream kept my kid alive for about a year. No joke.
