What does UPS do when a plane crashes and all the packages are destroyed?

I’m sure that UPS knows the tracking numbers and destination addresses for all of the stuff that was on board the plane. And possibly, to some degree, the contents of each package.
Does UPS phone each shipper/receiver? Do they wait for people to call in?
I figure that on a plane that size, there could have been 10,000 envelopes and packages. How do they get their hands around that big of a job?
