ISIL or ISIS? What's up with this?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) September 12th, 2014 from iPhone

It’s the same group; yet the White House insists upon referring to it as ISIL while the members of the media (and apparently everyone else) uses ISIS.

Why not just pick one as a designation and use that? This is what’s typically done with names of people or regions with difficult spellings.

So what’s the deal this time? Why the two designations for the same group and the recalcitrance of each side to stick with their choice rather than find an agreement?

Is this a political thing? What am I missing here?

What’s your opinion on why? Do you find this dichotomy annoying or petty (considering the seriousness of the threat they pose)? Is this really the time for a turf war between govt. and media?
