Do you know of a market chain that carries canned green jackfruit?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) June 4th, 2015

A chain such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Lucky’s, etc.

I can buy 6 cans on-line for about $20 shipped, which doesn’t seem unreasonable, but it’s a pain. I primarily want to try it, so it would be best if I found some place semi-local where I could buy a couple cans, then re-stock if necessary.

I recently found a recipe for vegetarian pulled pork calling for green jackfruit. I thought it unique, but I’ve learned since then that there was something about it on The Food Network, and that canned green jackfruit has been in demand. I just need a local source.

Added bonus, if you’re familiar with the product? Is it available whole? If not, are the chunks or wedges a better option?

Have you contacted any local oriental markets?
We visit an oriental market that is 45 miles away for specialty items.

I have checked a Mideastern and a Korean market. Local cooking supply house. Lucky’s Market. The trader Joe’s I access is tiny, and I’m pretty sure I checked there. Just what I’ve had access to thus far, @Tropical_Willie. The man at the Mideastern market thought it to be more of an Oriental ingredient, too.

The Halal restaurant has a small market in it, and the owner is checking into stocking jackfruit.

@ibstubro The market we go to is Vietnamese but has everything from Bangalore to the Philippines. Including a pots and pans section, they had twelve different woks.
