Flatulence in Film - when was the first?

I always thought that Blazing Saddles was the first film to feature flatulence as a plot device, but last night I ran across an old Abbott and Costello film where gurgling stomachs (and similar sounds) played a role.
Sure, there have been many films since (A Million Ways to Die in the West being a recent example) that feature flatulence. But how far back does the genre go?
