I did an update and now the volume on my laptop fades to almost nothing, can you help?

A few weeks ago I did an update on my laptop and now when I play music, a video, anything, the first few seconds it plays fine, and then fades to almost inaudible.
I’m assuming it was the update. I did another update since then, but it’s still having the same trouble. I chatted with Microsoft, and they tried to say it might be my speakers, no way I believe that, and then he had me do some things on my computer. At one point while following his direction I got a warning the next step might wipe out my computer and leave it totally non functioning. I was too nervous to do it.
Have you had this problem? Did you fix it? I googled a little, I’m not the only one to have had this problem, but I wanted to ask the jellies before trying anything.
