Why are 'paintings' not called 'painteds'?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33174points) April 16th, 2023

‘Painting’ is a gerundive – a verblike or verbal adjective; it has characteristics of verbs and descriptive adjectives.

Shouldn’t a painted work of art be a ‘painted’ or a ‘paint’ to be either a past tense (painted) or a noun?
