What are some respectable public Interior Design programs?

My boyfriend is looking into interior design programs, but can only seem to find Design Schools that charge a $100k+. Are there any public universities with decent interior design undergraduate degrees? Less expensive design school alternatives? Thanks!

Judi's avatar But it really depends on where you live. If you live in California you can get in state tuition.

There are design courses that are offered as Adult Education programs, and most colleges & universities allow folks to audit courses, for a reduced tuition fee.

Check out the Design Institute of San Diego ( They have a very respectable program, solely specialize in Interior Design, are accredited by CIDA and they are cheaper than schools like the Art Institutes chain. Also let him know that wherever he goes to school for interior design, he should make sure the interior design program is accredited by CIDA (Council of Interior Design Education).
