My adjective for art is usually in the realm of disturbing, as the quote attributed to da Vinci in which he stated: Great art should disturb the viewer. Art that is NOT disturbing, that is, for lack of a better word, domesticated, i.e. little girls in flowered sundresses on swingsets, that to me, is artsy. Or as I prefer to call it, artsy fartsy, which is a mildly derogatory term.

“Artsy” is not synonymous with “Art,” in my mind. Artsy can be something presented in a way to look as though it’s art, perhaps something with a pseudo-edge. It might also be something or someone that looks ‘different,’ even very presentable or showing an interest in aesthetics.

Art is something that makes you almost vomit because it’s so breathtakingly disturbing or beautiful. It is also something that, hopefully, alters the way you think, permanently, even if only a little. I also think some art has the capacity to make you run away from it because your senses cannot handle the overwhelming feeling it conjures.

“Art” is something designed to make people say, “Oh! Isn’t that an impressive thing to experience?!”

“Artsy” is something designed to make people say, “Oh! Isn’t so-and-so an impressive artist?!”

To me, “art” is about the creation, independent of the artist. Art carries meaning for those who experience it.

“Artsy” is about the creator; it’s pretentious by nature, regardless of its quality or lack thereof. It’s “art for art’s sake;” it’s priding oneself in doing something well, without considering whether it’s worth doing, or whether there’s a point to it…

@derekfnord I think you nailed it; arsy is ‘art for arts sake,’ while art is something different, maybe not ‘different.’

IMO, art is something that defines the artist and his style, and how it screams creativity. Creativity in the sense that the person is able to create some thing out of nothing .

Everyone is an artist !

IMO, artsy is when something is designed to give you the impression it is artistic.

whether it is or not, is your opinion.

for example, i don’t think you would accurately call something artsy if the creator didn’t consciously endeavor to create something artistic. for me, it implies some kind of post-modern, self-aware, attempt (whether successful or not) at artistic-ness.
