Is there any other anime as moving as Clannad?

Asked by JumpingRooftops (3points) January 11th, 2010

I love Clannad very much it’s my favourite anime. And I was wondering if there is anything else that’s similar. I know of all the other series by VisualArts/Key. Does anybody know anything?

A little google searching implied that recent KID games are similar.

Air

But beware, the ending is very sad.

I had the misfortune (?) of reading the spoilers and, since I don’t like that kind of ending in my stories, I didn’t really get very far in the series.
I rather enjoyed Mahoraba, and I also recommend just about anything by Komi Naoshi, though I wouldn’t say that his work is especially moving.
I recently discovered ”Eve no Jikan”, which was certainly worth watching (kinda like “I, Robot the novel by way of the various conventions of anime).
Filed in the same part of my brain as Clannad is a series called Kanon, that I also haven’t seen. It may or may not be sufficiently moving.
Your best bet, I would say, would be to poke around Wikipedia, or TvTropes.org, or the Anime News Network’s Encyclopedia.

Elven Lied
Wolfs Rain
I think the Gundams are pretty moving (Wing and seed/destiny more so than the others)

Ef- a Tale of Memories, Suzuka, Gunslinger Girl, and maybe Da Capo. Also: Kare Kano

By the way: this question opens itself to a lot of trolling/fanboying/fangirling/flamewars. Its almost like asking “what anime did YOU think was moving?”

While not quite as moving as Clannad AS, I got a similar feel and had a similar reaction to Angel Beats!, so I’d recommend that. If you enjoy moving animes, you might like Usagii Drop, but let it be known that what’s essentially the climax of that series occurs in the first episode.

@Nullo Clannad AS is my favorite anime and I still think the ending was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. As far as I’m concerned, the series stopped at episode 18/19. 18 had an immensely fulfilling ending that doesn’t rely on a complete cop-out. Watch up to that and you should be good; don’t miss out on the entire series just because the last few episodes shouldn’t have happened.
