What does Cyberspace look like to you.

Asked by Grisson (4634points) January 14th, 2010

In the introduction to ‘The Hacker Crackdown’ Bruce Sterling wrote “Cyberspace is the ‘place’ where a telephone conversation appears to occur.”

When I talk on the phone the space between me and other party seems dark and formless.

But when I’m on a site like Fluther.com, it’s like I am in a room with some of the same decor as the website with a bunch of people wandering around in it.

Does your imagination create a ‘geography’ and/or a visual image of where you are when you are ‘in’ Cyberspace? What does it look like?

George Orwell wrote that the future looks like a boot stamping a human face… Forever. I imagine cyberspace to be something similar, only substitute the boot with a penis and the word “stamping” with “slapping”... Forever.

@wonderingwhy Would you care to elaborate?
I mean, I could picture it as an underwater cavern dug into an ice cream isand in a sea of rootbeer, but I’m not sure that’s where you were heading.

what does it look like to YOU?

Grisson's avatar

@ultimateego As I said, it appears to be a room that I’m in, usually decorated in the colors of the site I’m on and there are a few people hanging out, and several conversations going on at once. I think this came from playing on MUCK’s.

A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts… A graphic representation of data abstracted from banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding…

For me, cyberspace is simply formless, out there, somewhere, it has not, in any way, taken on flesh.

I see this flat, changing pane of information that is changing practically every moment. Its something that I can change, I can create, and is tangible and there in front of me. I can explore it, and as I am, I’m simply changing the viewing area into another place.

Sounds like a description of subjective reality.
