Do you think a NSFW tab would be overkill?

Asked by gemiwing (14718points) March 4th, 2010

It wouldn’t be beneficial just for people at work, but people who have kids that could read over their shoulder or people who don’t want to read them.

Let’s be honest, does the NSFW tag do any good when the title contains lewd (can’t think of a better word right now) content?

I know we seem to have gotten a few new tabs in the past few months but would one more be too much?

I’m neutral but am curious about opinions. Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a quick search and didn’t see it.

That may be a good idea. Or have a setting where you can block NSFW questions on your account.

“NSFW tag do any good”

Does anything? Though blocking is a good idea.

OR you can just not Fluther at work.

does the NSFW tag do any good” yes because you can just pass over the question without having to check inside and say “Oh hey, this is NSFW!”.

Regarding a new “tab”, I’m going to pull a Slippery Slope argument there, as much as I hate them.
Once the NSFW questions get separated into a new tab, then you’ll see people asking for a “Tech” tab for all of those tech questions to go to. Then one for medical questions, then a relationship one, so on and so forth.
Everything will be in its own little box.

I don’t want that. I want to see the wide variety of all the questions. And I don’t want to have to separately view every tab to see if there’s something new. I love the questions that pop up in Meta, but I hate having to remember to go to it.

“yes because you can just pass over the question” ”“Oh hey, this is NSFW!”.”

Who does that?

I like the blocking idea too. Good call @erichw1504 .

@Sarcasm I hate slippery slope arguments too, but it’s a good point.

Who gets access to the NSFW tab? Would you require age verification in order to get at it? Would it be password protected or hidden in some way so that the boss wouldn’t know it’s there?

Honestly, I don’t see how this would serve us. The only protection on the internet is knowledge. Big Brother has no idea what he’s doing and I don’t want to see him on fluther.

I like the NSFW label; if I’m not in the mood or the place to go there, I don’t. Don’t think we need a separate tab, otherwise, we’ll end up with a tab for each question eventually.

It might have some use, in that a number of questions labeled ‘NSFW’ have perhaps a little too much content right in the subject line. With a tab for those, you could simply not open the tab if you preferred to avoid them. Then you wouldn’t have to explain anything to your 5-year-old or throw your body in front of your screen at work. It’s like having a “Must be 18” section at your video rental store. You know what you’re getting into if you go there, and you don’t take your kids.

no tab, but having it in the description is good and an option on a users profile might be a good addition.

I think the current system works well if the OP keeps the first question line mild.

I like the tab idea, but I would worry that would somehow imply that on the other questions, we would have to watch our language.

I think having an adult section (or a link/tab to access NSFW questions) would be a fantastic idea.

I do like this idea. It seems as though there are at least 3 NSFW questions per day anymore, and with my daughter learning to read she may glance over and ask “What is anal sex mom?”. Right now I have the laptop on the kitchen counter, and I am Fluthering while I am cooking dinner. She could easily walk in right now, look at the questions on the main page as I’m stirring the spaghetti sauce, and catch a glimpse of an inappropriate word.

Just my opinion, but I never had to worry about shielding the main page from my children before.

I’m curious. Does anyone even use the Questions and Discussions tabs? Couldn’t those be replaced with an NSFW tab?

prolificus's avatar

@jonsblond – I do not use the Questions or Discussions tabs. I think having a NSFW tab would be great because of the very reason you just described regarding your daughter. Why not have both a NSFW tab and the option to block those questions? In fact, I think the NSFW section should be limited to users above age 18 (don’t know how age would be verified, though).

I would appreciate there being a NSFW section.
