Do you put your glasses up or down when you put them away in the cupboard?

Asked by Frenchfry (7591points) August 8th, 2010

I know this is a odd question. My hubby says up and I say down. Just wondering.

With the opening faced down. I also put them in the sink like that.

With the opening facing up is obviously the better way to do it, since you don’t have to flip the cup over when fill it up.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@chocolatechip why is it better? Then you get dust or who knows what in your clean glass.

@TheOnlyNeffie That was my thoughts exactly.

I like them upside-down.
They’re just that much more stable, less likely to tip over if you’re someone with clumsy hands.

I keep them face up… they get used far too frequently to gather dust (!), and the rim hasn’t been in touch with the bottom of my cupboard, which is far more likely to have dust on it…

@TheOnlyNeffie

Only a problem if you have dusty cupboards. Plus, if you stack your cups, then only the top one will accumulate dust, which it probably won’t anyway if you use it often and if you don’t have dusty cupboards.

In my last home, which was pretty new, I kept them upright in the cabinets. Only the very least used ever got dusty. Where I live now, a house built in the 1920s, I keep them upside down. This house is basically a dust factory!

@augustlan I live in a century home also, so dust is a non stop issue. I can relate.

@chocolatechip and @harple what about the nice glasses that don’t get used often? Perhaps the ones you have set aside for company, or fancier occasions. Those are stored right side up, also?

harple's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie yes, they are – it’s a habit I guess… My feeling is that you can always rinse them, I still hate to have the rims touching the cupboard!

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@harple so, same concept, just opposite solutions.. basically. Now I am going to start being worried about the rims touching my cabinet and I will have to suspend my glasses. Or lay them sideways, lol.

downtide's avatar

I don’t like to have the rims touching the bottom of the cupboard either, and if a glass has been unused long enough to gather dust I would rinse it first anyway.

Austinlad's avatar

I’ve done it both ways over the years, but nowadays I keep them upright. Either way, though, I got into the habit a long time ago of rinsing them before using.

Tops down! so glad I got that off my chest

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Tops down. I’m the only one in the house, so it could be years before the ones in the back ever get used.

@chocolatechip I pick them up with my thumb on the down side and just do a quick wrist twist.

BoBo1946's avatar

down and dirty….excuse me, clean!

Mana's avatar

Tops up.

gravity's avatar

Top up because of the rim touching the cupboard… also what if by some chance a little bug found its way there, say God forbid a spider! and swiped his nasty lil leg against my glass then it would surely be on the rim of it. yikes! That makes me wig just thinking about it.

NaturallyMe's avatar

I put them upside down so that they don’t get dust in them.

Seaofclouds's avatar

I put mine top down as well. It’s how my family always did it and it stuck with me.

BratLady's avatar

Top Down. Don’t know why but it seems right to me.

Also, why are so many people worried about the rims touching the cupboards? Does nobody here have clean cupboards?
