Do you get a flu shot or do you avoid them, believing they give you flu?

Asked by Aster (20023points) September 24th, 2010

The last time I had the flu was in 1988, it was bad, and I had gotten a flu shot. Now I never get one and haven’t had flu since. What is your opinion of flu shots, why do you feel like you do, and do you get one or avoid?

I avoid them. I’m not in a high risk group to suffer complications from the flu, and I just don’t see any point in getting an injection to prevent something that I’ve managed to get through so many times on my own. I really feel like many of us are overmedicated as it is, and though I realise this isn’t technically a “medication”, it plays into the whole big picture for me. So, I do not get a flu shot unless it is required for my work.

I usually get a flu shot. I’ll be getting one soon. I used to get them when I was younger, then I stopped for a while, but in 2007, I had a really bad flu that lasted for over a week. Ever since then, I’ve been getting a flu shot every year. Haven’t gotten the flu since…

I know I’m not in any risk group, but I’d just rather not get the flu and it’s really easy to get a shot for it…

I’m not in a risk group and I have never gotten a flu shot. I don’t avoid because of the idea they might give someone the flu, that’s bogus. Just they never seem to be able to match the vaccine to the strain that’‘s prevalent during the flu season so what good does it do?

I avoid them.

Mostly because I don’t particularly care whether I get the flu. Honestly, if I come down with the flu, my husband cooks and washes dishes, and I get to lay in bed for three days. Win-win.

I got a flu shot about 8 years ago, and I ended up laid up in bed for almost 2 weeks, sick as the proverbial freaking dog. I haven’t had a flu shot since, and I haven’t gotten the flu since. I think it’s just another way for the drug companies to make money off naive consumers.

I get the flu shot every year. They definitely do not cause flu. I had the flu once and was extremely sick for a long time. I don’t wish to go through that again. I also get it to reduce the risk of me passing on the flu to people at high risk from dying from the flu (elderly, infants, immuno-compromised, etc.).

Plus, I work in a hospital so I WILL be exposed to the flu.

I don’t get them. One time I did and I got real sick. I have not had the flu in a long time.

I’m not in an at-risk group, which in the UK means I can’t get it even if I wanted it. I got through swine flu last year fine without it.

I don’t get them because i don’t need them and don’t believe they’re necessary. I generally avoid any drugs as far as i can.
