What is a quality external 1TB drive that I can get for my iMac?

Asked by Elumas (3170points) October 28th, 2010

I purchased an iMac 2 years ago with a 500GB hard drive with the assumption that it would take me about 4 years to fill up. However, I am now starting down 64GB of space left on the drive.
I would like to find a good quality 1TB hard drive to use for back ups and such. I’m a high school student now, so I will most likely be taking this to college. As for price, something under $150 is great, but under $125 is preferable. I can use that money for gas.

Thank you for assisting me in searching Amazon, but I have spent the last half hour looking over pages of different hard drives and I figured Fluther could suggest a certain drive out of personal experience not pages of statistics.

@Elumas I liked my old external hard drive from Verbatim. I can’t recommend an exact product by them, but I like what I’ve experienced.

I have 5 or 6 Western Digital 1TB external drives (all those pirated movies and songs gotta be stored somewhere!). I don’t know if they’re compatible with macs, but as far as quality I couldn’t be happier.

I have a few of these that I use with my iMac. They work fine with Macs. They come formatted as NTFS so you will want to reformat them as HFS+ (Journaled). You just plug in the drive and open Disk Utility and it takes about two minutes to format it. It is pretty hard to beat for $75.

And another note. If you want a bootable copy of your computer (I suggest this with a passion) when you format make sure you pick a GUID Partition Table. That will make it so you can use something like SuperDuper! to clone your hard-drive and make it bootable.

That just saved my bacon last month. I ran from the external for about a week until I could replace the internal. Fucking beautiful. It was over USB 2 but It worked and I can’t complain.

I second the vote for the Western Digital external drive.

I’ve had 4 of them (though 1 did die after about a year)

Just ordered the 1TB WD. Thanks!
I’ll definitely look into the partitioning too.
