What do you think I'm worth?

Asked by syphotoguy (233points) November 9th, 2010

I am a wedding photographer and I’d like to find out what people think my photography is worth? Pricing is always very difficult, I spend a huge amount of time after a wedding editing pictures and designing album but I am aware that some people think I am very expensive and some very cheap. I have always based my prices on the work involved and to a certain extent how much in demand I am. Here are my packages minus the prices, what I would like you to do is set a price for each package. To make your decision you would obviously need to see my work which you can do here and here and my website is here

– A stylish, 30 page “Creative Reportage” wedding book.

The pounds indicates that you are in England so it would be better for English people to weigh in but I think my son paid around $1,500 for something equivalent to package number 1. There is a sibling question to the right that might help you.

The website is nice, clean, quick-loading and with a lot of sample shots to view. I think I would work diligently on some of the wording, though: “send us an email”, instead of ”and email”, capitalizing Brighton, and separating the names of the towns with commas, as appropriate. Small things, really.

But that’s what you’re selling, isn’t it? Details. Sharp focus. Composition. The right shot at the right time. That’s why I’d avoid pricing based on “the work that’s involved” as if you’re a journeyman camera operator for hire at an hourly wage. You’re a craftsman, and you should advertise, package and price accordingly.

I’ve seen other photographers’ websites that have tie-ins to the models and their portfolios that they use (and have photographed). That’s an interesting symbiosis that can drive more traffic to your site, but if you’re more interested in “wedding” photography sales then you’d probably want to avoid too much of the really avant garde stuff that abounds elsewhere.

Thank you both for your answers. CyanoticWasp thank you for the typos, they’re all fixed now. You raise some interesting points particularly “youd probably want to avoid too much of the really avant garde stuff that abounds elsewhere.” What would you class as avant garde could you post some link to images.

I think I may need to write the question in a different way, what I was really after was feedback from the general public (non photographers that dont know me) about where I should be placed in the market based on my photography. Maybe I should have said just rate my work on a scale of 1 to 10.10 being top.

Honestly I think you are worth as much as you can get a couple to pay. Photography is an art and art is like real estate, it is worth what the buyer can stand.
