Do the individual pieces of your parquet floor fall out?

Asked by ftp901 (1318points) November 27th, 2010

I live in an apartment that has a parquet floor with this pattern:

The individual strips of wood keep coming up when I walk on them – in some places they are not longer glued to the floor. I want to find some really strong glue to fix these individual pieces (about 30 here & there). In the spots where they come up, both the back of the piece and the floor is rough with the residue of the original cement/glue so the new glue will have to be pretty strong in order to combat this. If you’ve had this same problem can you tell me how you fixed it?

The flooring was incorrectly installed; it should have been laid over a subfloor, and not directly onto the concrete. Have you called your landlord to send someone over to fix the problem? You conceivably could end up having to reglue every tile.

Agreed with BarnacleBill. If you choose to re-glue yourself, remove all the old glue off of the floor and the back of the pieces before proceeding. If you don’t, those pieces will stick up higher than the other ones. There’s also a chance that they will stick up higher than the other pieces anyway. Best to let a professional do it, if possible..

I hate that stuff! The house where I am currently house sitting has that in the kitchen, which is one of the worst places to have it. My friend bought his condo with that parquet flooring already installed (badly) and he’s never removed/changed/fixed it. It was not installed by a professional and there are random huge gaps between some of the “tiles” and crumbs get down in there and are almost impossible to vaccum up. And some of it has water damage on it and some of it has just come loose, like yours and my friend just lets it sit there all jiggly and loose. It drives me crazy and it looks terrible.

Every time I see one of the house hunting shows on the Home and Garden channel and the couple is looking at a house with parquet flooring, I shout at the TV for them to run away quickly!

If the landlord won’t fix is, I suggest buying a rug and laying it down over the floor.
