Know anything about large tonsils?

Asked by Supacase (14563points) December 14th, 2010

My 5 y/o daughter has “large tonsils.”

Last year, the doctor said it isn’t usually a big deal, but lately she has been saying that it feels like she swallowed something that is stuck and that it feels like she can’t swallow even though she can. They do not hurt, but they are uncomfortable.

She has never had tonsillitis and has had very few ear infections.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Is there anything that made it feel better and how did it eventually resolve itself?

Ask her doctor if you have any concerns at all. I had mine removed when I was very young, and it was very common in those days.

Do not let any health concerns pass, but ask her doctor immediately. Your daughter will feel a lot more comfortable knowing you trust her enough to ask the doctor.

It’s common and no big deal.

I had big tonsils, and never had them removed, although it was common for young children at the time. I was told they would eventually shrink. One did and one didn’t. No problems, though, although a couple of years ago I had a couple bouts of tonsilitis that I thought would drive me crazy. But antibiotics worked. Also, I have understood that taking out tonsils in a grown-up is far more painful than it is for a child.

Mine were huge and as an adult I had to have them out. :( It is far easier for kids to have them out than adults (shorter recovery time, less complications). Talk to her doctor and find out if this needs to be done for her comfort and her health. If they’re bothering her all the time, if they get swollen they’re doing to make her absolutely miserable, sometimes to the point of not being able to swallow. If they need to come out (or can), the sooner the better.
