What's another term for cafe?

Asked by meeeek (50points) December 15th, 2010

I just got curious since every coffee shop uses cafe. I was wondering if there were other terms I could use? Thanks!

Coffee house, espresso bar, java the hut (no that’s Star Wars), ummm, I’ll keep thinking about it. Are you naming a business?

Bistro, Beanery. Gosh, I thought I could come up with a lot when I entered this question but it’s harder than it seems.

Deli, diner, snack bar, salad bar, smorgasbord, eatery, supper club, tavern, restaurant, canteen, grill, chuck wagon, mess hall, saloon, food court, cabaret, road house

Kayak8, Yep, it’s for a business :)

@YARNLADY None of those have to do with coffee.

Well, maybe two or three – canteen, cabaret, road house, possibly chuck wagon – sorry, I did not see past cafe

@YARNLADY Canteen is a bar/pub/place with booze. Cabaret is a place with (often naughty) shows with your eats.

@papayalily Not always, the eating area in the movie set, such as MGM or Universal Studios is called the canteen, and there is no bar there. And a Cabaret is any place that provides entertainment along with food or drink. Even Starbucks, with their baristas counts as a Cabaret.

Oh, and I left Galley off my list.

house, pub, area, fun place…...

Cafe is generally used to describe a place where beverages and uncomplicated food is served. Given that cafĂ© is the French word for coffee, it would make sense that a place where you could go to get a cup of coffee and a bite to eat would be called a cafe. You wouldn’t go to a cafe for a steak dinner or a pizza.

Are you opening a business? You could use diner, bistro, coffee shop, eatery, depending on what you’re serving. Or you could just leave that sort of designation out the naming, and describe it as a coffee shop.

If coffee is the main focus, “grindery” might work. Also, “caffetteria” is an Italian term.

@papayalily If you use @YARNLADY ‘s examples, if you put the word Coffee in front of it, then it does have to do with coffee and could be very amusing and different.

I especially like Coffee Cabaret and Coffee Saloon. Thanks @YARNLADY !

Bistro is probably the closest word that means almost exactly the same thing as cafe.
