What should I get for Christmas?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19059points) December 18th, 2010

So, I became aware of the fact that my father still wants to get me a “big” gift, despite my age. I had given him a list of smaller gifts – a nice facial scrub, a book, a digital candy thermometer (that he will enjoy the fruits of…) – that kind of stuff. But I gave him no “big” gift ideas, and I’m to understand that unless I do, he’s getting me an iPad. Problem – I hate Apple (not at all what this thread is about). I also have a desktop and a laptop, a smartphone, and a Kindle – I’m pretty set in the electronics department.

So… ideas? In the iPad price range (give or take about $150)? It doesn’t have to be electronics, it can be anything (fun, not like paying off my credit card).

Ouh, Ouh, (hands raised). Let him pay off a bill. You can always buy yourself something later that you are sure you will want.

Or opt for 2 tickets to a show/concert that you want to see.

@AmWiser That’s what I really want, but apparently, Christmas is a time for fun, not taking care of everyday business…

Will he go for a GC card, or does it have to be a gift you can open?

You have to give us a clue about your lifestyle.

What about money to travel on an airline?

Flannel sheets for your bed (only about $50 at bed bath and beyond) and new towels.

Remote speaker

Jewelry

Spa day

Fruit of the month. Wine of the month.

@JLeslie No, it has to be a thing not the representation of one.
I don’t really travel much – or rather, everywhere I want to travel is overseas ;)
I do enjoy jewelry and Harry & David…
Gosh, lifestyle. Let’s see, student in college, currently in a decent place (with real plates and everything!), bookworm, old movie lover, Jedi Knight, female, mid-twenties, comfy-cute style, have 3 cats… What else would you like to know (I’m totally blanking)?

Do you need a new winter coat?

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@marinelife I don’t have a winter coat, but that’s mostly because I don’t know that I would use one… But I’ll think on it…

Amazon gift certificate, so you can impulse shop at will.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@BarnacleBill You know me so well ;D

Oh shut up about not needing a winter coat! We don’t want to hear it! :)

I agree with a spa certificate, for a facial or pedicure or “the )works.” What about an exercise machine? Musical instrument? (personally that’s my favorite gift, I love the challenge of learning to play it. Vintage sewing machine? Generally any supplies for a hobby you’ve been meaning to take up. Those have been my favorite presents: violin, guitar, accordion, sewing machine, dress form, bike.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@sliceswiththings It’s not that I don’t need one, so much as that I go out of my way to not be outdoors… You know how some people raised in an ultra-religious household grow up to be the biggest atheists? Well, in my household (as most Coloradan’s…) we worshiped Lance Armstrong. Same thing.

I noticed you didn’t mention a camera. You probably have one, but they’re the sort of technology that’s always improving.

How about a nice piece of art, if you have the space? After all, find the right small-time artist and you could have a solid investment in your hands! (if not, having a beautiful painting on the wall is still lovely :) )

In your place I’d shoot for World Peace.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@ratboy Clearly, you don’t know my father. He’s more of an instigator than a peace-maker… (Unless that’s a video game, which I wouldn’t know about.)
@iphigeneia Definitely something to sleep on.

Theater tickets, Gift card to a nice restaurant? Things that students don’t usually get to indulge in.
When I lived in Colorado everyone was amazed that I didn’t ski or climb. Like there’s nothing else to do there!

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@JilltheTooth That’s pretty much how it is now. They can’t imagine that anyone would ever live here if they didn’t want to ski, because that’s such a huge reason why they live here. Nevermind the dry climate or the schools or family… ::grumble, grumble::

If it was me, I would want a camera or some really fancy cheese from the Wisconsin Cheeseman or a new set of cooking pots and pans like these All Clad items. Or an overnight stay in a local, but fancy hotel, or a new bicycle, or a new pair of ice skates, or tickets to a play, or a certificate to take a one day cooking class.

Would you have use for a portable navigation device like a Garmin or Tom Tom thingie?

Pots and pans are a great idea, or a quality set of knives?

And, back to the jewely, a very nice bracelet. For some reason I have a couple gold bracelets given to me, and I treasure them. I am not much of a jewelry person, just a few key pieces, so it was odd to get jewelry, even took me a while to start using them. I also have a gold bangle that was my grandmothers, it was one of the pieces I took when she died. Actually, my sister handed it to me saying she wouldn’t use it, we were splitting up our grandma’s jewelry. I would have never picked it as an item I wanted, but now I am so happy my sister got to it first and decided she didn’t want it, because I love it.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Kardamom Ooo! I love me some Maytag blue…
@Neizvestnaya No, that’s the great thing about my smartphone, it has Google turn-by-turn navigation built right in
@JLeslie I do love bracelets. And necklaces. And earrings. And rings (ooo! rings!). And anklets. And…

@papayalily Also, I think the cheapest Ipad is $500?
