In a post-apocalyptic world, what would be your tips and strategies for survival?

Asked by Joker94 (8180points) December 20th, 2010

If you were to survive an event that left most of the world in ruins, what would be your strategy for surviving? Would you stockpile resources? Steal them from others? Would you try to stay in your home, or would you try to find a more stable community?

It kind of depends on the form of the apocalypse, no?

I think that in areas with strong community, those communities would band together for protection and aid. We’d try to recover our government structures as best we can. Except for a world destroying comet, I can’t imagine an apocalypse that would kill 5 billion people at once. Or even within a decade.

So my strategy would be to help rebuild the community. My tip would be to gather together with people as best you can and rebuild the community. It is the only way to get security and opportunity over the long term. If people stay apart and everyone for themselves, we’ll end up killing off ourselves.

United we stand; divided we fall.

Lay my hands on every available weapon and all available ammo.

The same advice I give whether or not an apocalypse happens: better your standards of living through things like sustainable and easy food production, being able to get food and materials from the wild, knowing how to make/repair your own tools, etc. All these things are just good advice in general and contribute to your overall wellbeing, and being less dependent on markets and stores means catastropic situations won’t matter too much to you.

Also, community like @wundayatta said, and weapons like @CaptainHarley said. Both good things.

I’d roll over and play dead. I don’t want to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

Id go out into the woods. Honestly, I feel my biggest threat in a post apocalyptic world would be other humans rebelling in all sorts of ways as the constraints of normal society collapse all about them. Id just go out in the woods and live off the land with a few trusted friends and family members.

thank god i took that wilderness survival class :P

Are there zombies or not?

I’d go in search of other survivors. You need food, clean water, shelter, heat, mechanics. I’d want to pool as many knowledge/ability resources as possible.
