Can someone tell me a brief history of Fluther?

Asked by Math321 (688points) December 29th, 2010

I’d like to know more about Fluther and all of the questions about how it got started are super old. The “Who started Fluther?” question would have been enough if the references were still around. Can anyone help?

Ben Finkel and Andrew McClain were college friends who started Fluther about four years after they graduated from college.

Thanks for your responses, but I’d like to know more about things like who’s idea it was, how it got enough people to join to start asking and answering questions, how it got $ to start with, stuff like that. Founder-Jellyfishes, if you guys are reading this, can you respond, please?

Ben and Andrew are both very busy with other projects right now so I’m not sure if you’ll get an answer from them. You may.

Here is an article that contains an interview with Ben that should answer some of your questions.

Youtube has an interview with the Founders of Fluther and they tell you all about the genesis of this site.

Many, many eons ago, a young boy named Andrew was hiking in the himmilayas. He was told a story, of a mystical pnd, at the top of a mountain which no mortal could reach. There was a kindred soul living in this pond, and because of his loneliness, he would have many a reward for the person who could reach him. Young Andrew, with nary a family member or friend decided to make the journey. Many tried to stop him, for all others who went died on the way, but Andrew didn’t have anything to lose. He gathered up just a few cans of rations, and 2 bottles of water. With this, and 2 climbing picks he started of his journey. He started climbing the base of the mountain, a cold wind chilling his bones. As he got higher, he passed a cave. There were lights, a fire burning and the inviting smell of roast beef and gravy wafting from it. He heard whispering voices, telling him to go in. there was plenty of food and much to drink, and a warm blanket inside. Then, on a ledge above the cave, he saw a small figure. Old and weak, it could barely speak. It warned him of the spirits within the cave, and the evils that they did. Practicing black magic, they drew all travellers into their cave, where they devoured their souls without mercy. Just as the figure was about to say one last thing, a whisp of black smoke drifted up from the cave, and a bright red light shone from it. The rocky ledge crumbled, and the figure fell down the face of the mountain. It’s screames echoed all the way up to Andrew, haunting his soul. He had no chice but to go on. He soon ran out of water, and two days later, food. He was cold, frost had built up all over his body. The was tired and weak from the cold and lack of oxygen. Ice broke off of his fingers as he climbed up the jagged rocks, cutting his fingers. Just as his hand was starting to slip, he felt a warm light shine down on his face. He climbed up a ledge, and saw it! A beutiful, dark blue pond. Surrounded by edless fields of grass and flowers, trees and bushes. He looked behing him and saw more fields, but no mountain from which he had climbed. He looked around, and saw no signs of life. Thirsty and tired, he went to drink from the pool. As he was drinking, he saw something move underneath the water, But he was not afrain. As the water rippled, a gigantic jellyfish appeared in from of him. It aked him how he arrived, and he told him of the cold, the hunger and the evil spirits. The jellyfish was pleased with his journey, and asked him what he wanted. He could have riches, women, anything in the world. The only thing he wished for was that the figure that had saved him by the cave could come back to life. The jellyfish nodded, and the water started to bubble around him. Out of the mist, a fish appeared. This fish told him that he was the rebirth of the figure on the mountainside, and thanked him for being so kind. The fish them whispered to the jellyfish, and the jellyfish nodded. The jellyfish took one of the fishes ribd, and from it a human figure was made. He was to be called Ben. Ben and Andrew were given ownership of the endless fields, with their duty to find followers to populate this amazing land. The fish would guide them and the followers making sure that nobody strayed from the path, or made mistakes. The jellyfish would arize into the sky, to looks over his followers, and protect them from the evil spirits. Many would come, some evil spirits disguised, but the jellyfhish would send them back to their horrible prison, known as “Yahoo”. To this day, you can see the fish, if you look hard enough, guiding us and giving us advice, while the jellysish looks over Ben and Andrews domain, lest anything go wrong.

Thank you for reading the history of fluther.
