Is sitting in a dry sauna good for you?

Asked by Baddreamer27 (710points) January 14th, 2011

There is a dry sauna at the gym I go to, next to the cardio room. Is it good to sit in the sauna? Does it help you to lose weight and when are you supposed to go?

Relaxes muscles, improves breathing and limit to 15 minutes to start at 160 F.
Weight loss comes from pushing away from table, you have to exercise hundreds of minutes to drop pounds and keep it off. Water is the only thing you lose and it is replaced the next time you drink water.

They also use putting people in a hot box as a method of torture, so I’ll bet there’s a limit to how much can be considered healthy.

forces you to sweat out toxins, and you can always steam it up a for a bit with a dousing of water on heat source [frowned upon in gyms if it is electric but I have done it anyway]. The traditional water bucket is often there in saunas, even electric ones—hard to pass on using it.
I like access to both sauna and steam.

I love saunas. My sister used to live in a house that had one, and I would make every effort to use it when I was visiting. It is great for clearing toxins through sweat and it does wonders for your complexion. As for the losing weight part, I tend to agree with @Tropical_Willie – the only thing that will help there is portion control and watching what you put in your mouth.

As long as you’re healthy enough to handle it, yes, it’s fine. Be sure to drink lots of water before, during, and after.
