Thoughts on a "f(x)" tattoo?

Asked by dee1313 (953points) January 19th, 2011

I’m thinking of getting a tattoo that says “f(x)” for a few reasons.
1) I enjoy math.
2) I enjoy puns.
3) I like to fidget.
4) I’d be able to fidget with the tattoo, which means it’s a functional tattoo, which is a pun.

Anywho, I want your thoughts. Did #4 make sense? I love math, but was never good with definitions or anything.

Also, where would I put it? I’m considering pain-wise, how easy it would be to fidget with (my current tattoo is on my shoulder blade, so it’s not each to play with), and how easy it would be to cover up (for work or interviews).

For example, I’m considering getting it on my left wrist. I’m right handed, so it’ll be easy to play with, I can cover it up with a watch / large bracelet, but I think that would hurt waaaaay more than the tattoo on my shoulder blade did. Thoughts?

How about on your inside ankle? You can cross your leg and be able to see it and play with it. I don’t know about the pain factor though. I’ve never had a tat.

I can’t speak for the meaning of your tattoo, because I know nothing about math and I don’t understand what it means.

But as for placement, tattoos are generally more painful when they’re on a part of your body where the bone is close to the skin. I have three tattoos so far – one on the back of my neck on the top vertebra, one on my back between my shoulder blades, and one on my leg just above the Achilles tendon. The one on my neck hurt the most because there’s no fat there – just skin on top of bone. My calf was least painful because it’s more fleshy.

I don’t think your wrist would hurt any more than your shoulder blade, but I don’t have tattoos in those places so I can’t say for sure.

Coule of thoughts/questions: (1) So how big you thinking? (2) It would be cool to use a nice font so some script research is in order. I have a couple of inside wrist tats that are the combination of 3 distinct font faces taken apart & repositioned. I messed with em in illustrator for a bit. (3) The function idea is cool…so a function of x is best vs f(y) or f(x,y)?

I think its a really cool idea. Tattoos are something that should mean a lot to you, not us though. It seems like this is something that is meaningful to you so I say go for it.

If I saw you on the streets with that tat I would totally call out how bitchin it was though. Then again im a bit of a math nerd myself lol

As per the pain I have an octopus that goes down to my wrist. Honestly even though most say the wrist hurts the most, I found that part to be the least painful. It was the fatty parts of my arm that killed me lol

I have two medium sized tattoos on both wrists on the inside. I have my back done. I don’t think wrist tattoos hurt more than shoulder blades, whatsoever.

What’s the pun?

I have one on my wrist. I love it, but I wish I’d gotten it a bit smaller so I didn’t have to wear a larger watch (especially since my wrists are so small, it looks weird).

The tattoo would “fidget” which would make it functional.

Thank you everyone.

@963chris
1) Not sure, maybe around a quarter or half dollar size.
2) No research necessary. I’d be taking straight from the textbook. It’s very pretty anyway, and the thickness of some parts and thinness of others would make for great fidgeting. (the f(x) of this image is what it’d look like)
3) I hate y’s aesthetically and I’ve always sucked at writing them in uppercaps.

@papayalily That is a good point. I’m a small woman, so I’ll have to find something that looks good and work around that for the size.

@uberbatman Yay for math nerds!

Thank you everyone that mentioned the pain part. As long as it’s not worse than on the shoulder blade I’m good.

aight. that looks pretty close to the standard times new roman font face. wrists might hurt a bit more but i noticed moreso that they take longer to heal or are a bit cranky.

Though your choice for a tat is indeed strange….do what you will I guess. If it suits your personality then get it, and you are a math junkie so it works. Let me know when you plan on getting it cause I will get one lol.
