First, if you keep losing it, odds are good that you’re doing it deliberately, if unconsciously. As Freud famously wrote, there are no accidents. Is there some reason you really don’t want to have this thing? Perhaps you should try putting it away for a little while and seeing if it makes you any happier.

But if you want a way to find it when you’ve lost it, I recommend taking advantage of the same phenomenon which caused you to lose it: your own unconscious processes. Close your eyes, think of the object, reach out your arm, and just wander randomly without trying to think about what you’re doing or where you’re going. It may take a minute or two, but you should eventually be led directly to the spot where you left it. This process works for anything you’ve lost, incidentally, so you can do the same thing for missing keys, wallets, babies, etc.

No I don’t keep losing it, I just need a technique to find it WHEN I do lose it.

There isn’t one to track it down. I’ve made a conscious effort to keep track of my iPod Touch, and have never misplaced it. It takes 30 days to cultivate a new habit.

I find I do better keeping track of things that I view indispensible, or cannot afford to easily replace. I would probably misplace a Shuffle.

EDIT: The habit is that I always put it back in the same place. I have a small zippered cloth bag that I keep some paper money, my health club card, and credit card receipts in, as well as the ear buds. Sometimes I put my cell phone in there. I think it works for me because it goes in with other things I don’t want to lose. Perhaps identify a “place” for the Shuffle in your car, house, work, etc. and make a conscious effort to put it there when you shut it off.

Yes – I’ve found the always put something down in the same place habit to be the most effective.

there are ways to keep from losing it, but once you lose it, it is lost.

Get an iPhone instead, then you can call it and locate it by the ring.

Yes, I guess you could do that but I’m more one of those rush-rush ppl.
