The scientist and the party girl -- anybody recognize this science fiction story?

Asked by submariner (4165points) February 1st, 2011

About 20 years ago I read a short SF story about a future in which technological advances had eliminated most of the need for people to work. The population consisted of a small number of people who did what little real work was left to do—scientists, for example—and the rest, who spent their days merrily consuming and being entertained. These two types of people rarely interacted. The story describes a romance between a male scientist and a female consumer, and how difficult it was for them to understand each other.

Can anyone tell me the title and/or author of this story?

Sounds to me like something Rod Serling would write.

Reminds me a bit of Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, but that’s definitely not it.

A bit off topic, but its not really sci-fi.
Work aside, it is the story of my parents and many many couples. Didn’t you ever hear the the term “opposites attract?”
