What is significance of the red and green light on the outside of a firehouse?

At least in Midwest, I have noticed that every firehouse has a green light and a red light as coachlite type fixtures on each side of the doors where the fire engines are lodged. what is the significance of these colors?

Just telephone the firehouse or stop by and ask the guys who work there.

They will be happy to give to a complete explanation.

They might even invite you in for lunch, and if so, you will have the best food you have ever eaten, anywhere.
