Is necessary or customary to tip for this particular type of delivery service? Why or why not?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) February 17th, 2011 from iPhone

I understand that furniture delivery guys are doing major heavy lifting and Pizza delivery people are paid pretty low wages similar to waitstaff. So a generous tip for them is understandable.

The local Kroger Pharmacy offers free delivery which must be scheduled 24 hrs. in advance so it’s not really on-demand like Pizza.

Obviously the store offers this to attract customers to patronize them rather than the competition I’m sure that their hefty markup on prescriptions makes it quite profitable for them to offer this service :)

Evidently they use some external type of delivery service company.

I would assume that these delivery companies would pay a fairly standard fulltime hourly wage with benefits equivalent to any other type of blue collar worker (rather than the pittance paid to waitstaff.)

So, wouldn’t this make the delivery driver more equivalent to a bus driver or UPS worker rather than someone who is reliant upon tips in order to make a living wage.

Also, he Pizza driver generally uses his own vehicle (and gas?) unlike these other drivers with a company vehicle so I understand tipping him.

With the typically exhorbitant costs of most prescriptions, if a tip is part of the equation, how would it be calculated?

So, what would you do? Or what have you done for a prescription delivery?

I always tip delivery people in cash so they can keep every cent. They are nearly always poorly paid.

Everybody likes a tip. So long as you exist in Western hemisphere (and maybe the Eastern one as well?) you cannot possibly go wrong (except in the quantity) with a tip.

My tipping rules is simple—if I think they deserve a tip, they get one. I don’t believe in mandatory tipping, and while I do realize that waitresses and the such get paid not so much, that could be considered an issue between them and management. Tipping shouldn’t be forced nor expected.

Well, now I’m a little confused :).

So, for those who answered yes, do you also tip a UPS driver? Or the mail carrier with a package requiring a signature?

I think there was a similar Q a little while ago (before I even called Kroger) if I remember correctly.

The general consensus was to NOT tip the UPS driver. So this isn’t exactly the same but…

Any Flutherites around who’ve worked for Fedex or UPS ?

I’m curious as to how their driver payscale compares to their warehouse or office people at those same companies.

My offhand guess would be that drivers make equal or greater.

So now I’m thoroughly mixed up. Ha ha.

I would never calculate a percentage tip for any type of delivery. I would give a flat 5 dollars and call it a day.

I would hope that people that make script deliveries are paid a decent salary, not like a waitress.

No, I would not tip a delivery driver in this case.

@John

Kroger uses a delivery service company, so I would assume that it’s a full time job for their drivers much like any other delivery co. such as UPS.

I know that Pizza guys are mostly part time and don’t make crap so depend upon tips to eke put a living.

But a Pharmacy delivery co. is handling items far more critical to life and health so I would assume they pay enough to attract reliable people.

They presumably would make at least equivalent to Fedex or UPS, no?

I’m assuming that’s why Kroger specifically pays an independent professional company rather than sending out one of the stockboys in his own car and hoping for the best :)

@Buttonstc The UPS and mail carriers get a Christmas/holiday gift from me, not a tip every time the do something for me. The gift is based partly on their service and how much I used them over the year.

The guy that plows the snow on my street gets a bottle of Black Velvet every Thanksgiving. Then he will plow the street from the other direction and throw the snow to the other side of the street.
