They put it around/are born from other dogs like this, basically rough it up themselves by just playing rough with it, then eventually teaching it to hurt things, and it’s said that when animals get the taste of blood they can’t stop. It’s really sad actually, animals can be that way but they obviously aren’t meant to be if we have to physically make them like that.

Its done by abusing the animal. Why do you want to know the horrible details?

You train them right when their born and neglect them. Depressing.. Isn’t it? And poor pitbulls certainly have a bad rep. (they are actually the sweetest dogs).

Agree with Babo though, why do you want to know?

Dogs taught to be aggressive usually already have a genetic predisposition, and strong powerful jaws are a plus. Training consists of a lot discipline believe or not, and very calculated but planned opportunities for the dog to practice its innate prey drive. The dog is then rewarded when it demonstrates this drive. Not all aggression-trained dogs are abused or neglected as previously posted. This may be the case sadly though, for novice dog trainers who have unwholesome goals and ulterior motives for the dog’s ultimate aggressive behavior. If you look at all of the dogs trained for law enforcement, and professional security detail for example, you’ll find those dogs have a very loving, happy puppyhood, often in normal families who foster them. They have to go through basic obedience training as puppies and then an assessment which determines which candidates will advance into formal training. The ultimate goal of all this training is always to improve and heighten natural ability the dog harnesses, not destroy its spirit or confidence. They are professionals, and therefore are obedient to commands given. This of course is very different from the abused, neglected dog taught to hate/bite. Their humans have little or no control once the instinct is unleashed.

why would anyone want to train an animal this way…they are hurting the dog, potentially hurting another person and inevitably hurting themselves when the dog dies or has to be put down.

@ mzgator ~ criminals are governed by greed. They are not concerned with all of those morals. To them, the dog is easily replaceable, and seen as property.

This makes Babo sad.

What happened to step 6? Is that the part you edited?

hairypalm's avatar

there is no step six…....that’s apart of the rules

Allie's avatar

What the heck? Animal abusers are dumb.. they can’t even count to seven.

You’re forgetting that there are police dogs which are not abused and total sweeties when they’re not on the job.

I think there is a difference between a police dog who is normally well natured and an animal that is trained to be brutal all the time (even to its owners, who then beat the animal and only make it more violent). Police dogs attack on command (and usually not in English so there is no confusing it), but abused animals are dangerous all the time.

police dogs aren’t trained to be killers

Allie's avatar

Right. They’re trained to attack.

I’m afraid it is much the same as people… It can be some of either. Mostly you don’t know. Sometimes you don’t want to know because who can explain crazy.
I have encountered dogs that are malevolent. Sometimes I think it is in-breeding (the nature argument…). Mostly I suspect it is how the animal is (mis)treated. Nuture.
Hunting is legitimate. You don’t often train dogs to kill even for hunting.
Forgive for a contrarian grammarian, you can’t train a dog to kill, you un-train it. A dog that does not kill is a domesticated animal. A dog that is a killer should be destroyed. That is what ‘husbandry’ is.
Forgive me as this is an emotional topic. I have firm views but I do not wish to offend.
I lived across the alley from a household that ‘trained’ pit-bulls to grab and shake an inner-tube that was hung from a tree. Once they got the dog to grab hold, they would hit it with sticks to keep it mad as it swung to and fro. You would think this would be criminal, but we had to wait for someone to get hurt. Fortunately/unfortunately before this happened, there was a drive-by in front of their house and the bullets that missed ended up in my kitchen.
The neighbors, the dogs and their lawn-furniture (an upholstered couch for the season) were all shortly gone.
No, they left the lawn-furniture.

Hardly all dogs that attack or are killers are abused. Everyone here immediately thinks of the poor animal being abused…. That is sad to me.
I grew up around K9’s and breeders who worked with animals for protection.
All of the animals I have seen in this field are treated with more respect than people.
Never harmed and never abused.
There is a training process much like going to school. It is a fairly simple process once the animal learns that he/she will be rewarded,
Animals are almost as smart as humans.

People that abuse animals to turn them in to killers are usually people who fight dogs. Totally different.

P.S. Pit Bulls get a bad rap and have an anger problem/mental problem due to the heavy, heavy amounts of inbreeding.
Oh and as far as dogs not “attacking” from a command in English, that is wong. Most all dogs unless German attack based on the English commands.
