Have you ever sold your hair, or know anyone who has?

Asked by JustJessica (4054points) April 16th, 2011

I have pretty long hair and I’m cutting it tomorrow. My first thought was to donate it, but with further research on the web I’ve discovered since my hair is dyed they won’t use it. I can still donate it but chances are they won’t use it. So my next thought was maybe I can sell it, and I did a little research and found with my hair length and thickness I can get between $600—$1,000 per foot. I would just like to know if anyone has ever done this before, and if so, what did your hair go for? Do you know if people buy dyed hair? Is it more valuable to have naturally wavy hair, or could this make my hair less valuable?

As long as you have not had your hair bleached, Locks of Love will indeed accept and use your hair if it is merely colored or dyed.

You may be able to donate your hair to another organization that collects it to use it for sopping up oil spills. Sorry I don’t have a link to that kind of organization, but they apparently used a lot of hair during the gulf oil spill.

@Kardamom I’d much rather donate it, so thank you for that useful piece of info!!!

I know this guy who had long ass hair, and ended up cutting and selling it to a place that makes wigs from real hair. He has red hair, and apparently a lot of people seem to want long red hair, so he got about 600 in all.

@Kardamom has the right answer. Locks of Love is where you want to go. I know of an entire family…6 boys who all grow their hair long and every year get it cut short for Locks of Love…they put up with months of hippy comments from ignorant people and they do their jobs with pride! I wish I had ½ their guts.

My husband donated to Locks of Love a few months ago, it’s a great organization.

If you are going to sell it, then sell. IF you can get that much money per foot then why donate it. I don’t think mankind appreciates good people enough so I am just out for myself. I only help my own (friends and family). I don’t help strangers very often.

@Mikewlf337 Locks of Love is an organization that specifically makes wigs for cancer patients. That’s why people donate their hair to them. I think most cancer patient appreciate this service very much. One of my best friends had cancer and she was able to get a wig to preserve her dignity. If no one (strangers and friends alike) never donated their hair to this organization, she would not have been able to do that.
