How do I cite books of the Bible?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) May 6th, 2011

Okay, my mum is writing a paper that uses the Bible as a source, and she asked me for help on how to cite it. I know the formatting for the Works Cited Page and stuff, and I know how to do in text citations, but when I go to the works cited page, do I cite each book as a different source? Do I italicize the book names as well as the version of the Bible? (For instance, would I say ”John”. New Living Translation. ?) Or would I underline John instead?

Other Print/Book Sources

Certain book sources are handled in a special way by MLA style.

The Bible

Give the name of the specific edition you are using, any editor(s) associated with it, followed by the publication information. Remember that your in-text (parenthetical citation) should include the name of the specific edition of the Bible, followed by an abbreviation of the book, the chapter and verse(s). (See Citing the Bible on the In-Text Citations – The Basics page, which you can access by following the appropriate link at the bottom of this page.)

The New Jerusalem Bible. Ed. Susan Jones. New York: Doubleday, 1985. Print.

Citing the Bible

In your first parenthetical citation, you want to make clear which Bible you’re using (and underline or italicize the title), as each version varies in its translation, followed by book (do not italicize or underline), chapter and verse. For example:
Ezekiel saw “what seemed to be four living creatures,” each with faces of a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle (New Jerusalem Bible, Ezek. 1.5–10).

If future references employ the same edition of the Bible you’re using, list only the book, chapter, and verse in the parenthetical citation.

@Aesthetic_Mess :

Yeah, I know all of that already. I meant, with the separate books, when I put “The New Jerusalem Bible. Ed. Susan Jones. New York: Doubleday, 1985. Print.” and such, before that I have to put the book. Would I underline that, italicize it, or what?

I don’t believe you would put separate books of the bible in your Works Cited page. You put the Bible and that’s it. If you have to put the specific name of a Bible book (like Psalms), then maybe you’d have to cite it like an anthology(?)
I did a paper where I had to cite the bible, but I didn’t have to put the specific book in the citation

@Aesthetic_Mess : Maybe… I guess it is sort of an anthology.

Did your teacher say you had to put the specific book in it?
