Should I go to the ER or stick it out till Monday?

Asked by minniemau5 (432points) June 11th, 2011

I woke up early Thursday morning with severe pain in my entire abdomen. The pain was so bad that I couldn’t walk or stand up right, I had to bend over. I went to a walk-in clinic and the doctor there gave me an anti-spasmodic to help with bowel cramping. On Friday I felt better. The pain was still there, but kind of ‘masked’ by the medication. Once the medication wore off, the pain would come back. Today the pain is worse than Friday, yet still not as bad as Thursday since I’m still taking the medication. However I’m noticing that the pain is only in my right side now. I feel a lot of pain in the upper right quadrant, but if I press on the lower right quadrant it really hurts too. I have been taking GasX but it doesn’t seem to help at all; also I’m going to the bathroom normally. It’s Saturday and all the walk-in clinics with an X-ray department are closed.. I’d have to go to the ER if I really want them to investigate. Basically I’m wondering, do you think I should go to the ER today? Or should I stick it out and wait until Monday and see my doctor?

Go to the ER. I mean like right now. There are people in there with a common cold right now. This is a valid reason to go.

I guess I just feel dumb going there with only abdominal pain… I mean, I don’t really have any other symptoms.. no nausea or anything that I’ve noticed. It’s just pain. :/

I wouldn’t presume to give out medical advice over the intranet, but I have heard that if it’s appendicitis, you will feel some relief when you push in and it will hurt more when you release.
My Cousin went to the ER a couple of months ago for abdominal pain and they sent her home with pain meds, where she died a few hours later.
I wouldn’t mess with it if I were you, but I guess a lot depends on if you have insurance or not, and how much risk you are willing to take.

Go to the ER. It sounds like it could be your appendix, and they will need a blood test to make that determination.

Go to the ER. This happened to my sister literally just the other day, she went, and yep it was appendicitis. You might as well go and get an ultrasound just to be sure, if it is your appendix you don’t want it to burst.

I went once when I had some nasty pains in the abdomen. Turned out to be really bad gas, but it was probably better to make sure.

If you are having repeated abdominal pain to the point of doubling over, and a doctor has given you medication for it, but it’s getting worse, you need to go to the ER. If it’s on your right side, it could be your appendix, or a whole host of other things that only an abdominal ultrasound will find.

It may be “only” abdominal pain, but if the cause of it is appendicitis, that’s not anything to mess around with! Please, please go!

Go and let us know when you get back what it was. Good luck!

Get thee thy ass to a hospital!
And, please, don’t stick it out till Monday.

My dad had something like that a while back; turned out that a segment of his small intestine had flipped over on itself like an animal balloon. Sounds hospital-serious to me.

HELL, I thought you should have ran to the doctor’s office on Thursday AM when you first posted here. I think when you went to the doctor’s office, they should have sent you to get an ultra sound at the very least.

If this pain is on your right side, that is telling you to get to the ER now.

My sister had extreme abdominal pain as well, she had gall stones and nearly had emergency surgery. She ended up trying to take a less invasive approach with the help of supplements, a nutritionist and her doctor and is doing better now and may be able to avoid surgery altogether.

It could be appendicitis, it could be gall stones, it could be serious problems in your intestines.

That much pain, over that much time, with medication not improving your condition is reason to go.

Now.

I agree with everyone…GO. I didn’t have extreme pain like that until shortly before they finally scheduled surgery to take it out. I felt weird and had pressure. Ultrasound showed that it was large end of normal…surgeon was not going to take it out ..sent me home…next day I was in moderate to severe pain…ultra sound showed small end of abnormal…surgeon was less than nice about having to take out an appendix that appeared relatively normal….turned out to be acute. I was so happy to feel “right” again, I did not care that she was totally lacking in bedside manner. GO…it’s not worth the risk. take care and good luck!

Go now, if you are still hesitating. A stomach ache that lasts more than a day has to be seen by a doctor.
