How to get lipstick stains out of a shirt?

Asked by NostalgicChills (2787points) July 9th, 2011

My mother has a shirt that has already been washed, dried, etc, and the lipstick stains still won’t come off.
Any ideas on easy removal?

Dip the stain with some rubbing alcohol, then detergent. Let it soak for awhile, then wash in warm/hot water. Or if you have some hairspray, spray the stained area with hairspray, let dry, then wash the fabric in warm soapy water. Both methods should work——I’ve had my the collars of my dress-shirts stained with lipstick before, and those methods worked well for me.

I am worried that the drying (assuming in the dryer) set the stain, since lipstick is a petroleum or oily product.

I took a shirt to a drycleaner once and it had grease on it. The lady in the dry cleaner said to me “Why are you bringing it here? You could just put Lestoil on it and that will get it off.” Lestoil is in the supermarket, where Mr. Clean and other cleaning fluids are. It kind of smells like a pine-sol smell, but it works. I use it sometimes for tough stains. You may have to relaunder the shirt an extra time once you get the lipstick out, but if it works, it’s worth it. Just soak the spot with the Lestoil for a few hours, then launder with detergent and hopefully it works.

Please update as to what you choose and the outcome.

One of the best products on the market is Shout Advanced Set In Stain Remover. It really works.

I use dish soap for any type of oily stain. It even works on stains I miss the first time that end up being washed and dried.
