What are some songs "everyone" likes?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21675points) July 23rd, 2011

I’m expanding the music collection at work, and need music that is good for all audiences.

I’m looking for things like:

Pointer Sisters – I’m So Excited
Toploader – Dancing In The Moonlight
Adele – Rolling In The Deep

… and so on.

Do you mean music that everyone who works there has to listen to? What about customers or clients? What type of facility is it? When I’m working, I don’t want to hear any music; but an office is very different from, say, a coffee shop, a hardware store, or a salon.

I’ll bet there’s no such thing as music that pleases everybody. I’ll bet there’s not even a type of music that doesn’t annoy anyone.

@Jeruba I think the OP is asking for music that is appropriate for all audiences, all ages. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t think such music exists that everyone is supposed to enjoy. I imagine he’s looking for upbeat, friendly, non-offensive, music about “trivial” topics that are either easily relatable or harmless and appropriate for everyone. Hence, his examples about being excited and dancing, rather than anything about bitches and hoes and of a darker nature.

I don’t know anyone who is not a fan of Queen’s first greatest hits album.

@Vunessuh, don’t you think the setting makes a difference? a carnival versus a law office, a game store versus a hotel lobby?

I really don’t mean to quibble. I just think it’s a mistaken assumption that you can find music that’s suitable for everyone. Some of the most popular varieties are ceaselessly irritating to me, for example, unless I can manage to tune them out. So I have to be redefined as not part of the “everybody” he’s talking about. Never mind, I’m used to that. But I do wonder who is offended by silence.

Since I Don’t Have You, The Skyliners, has to be the best slow dance song ever written and produced.

Vunessuh's avatar

@Jeruba The OP clearly states that he is looking for music appropriate for all audiences and has provided examples so we don’t answer the question blindly. The setting would be relevant had he not provided examples. If music was inappropriate for his work area, he probably wouldn’t have asked the question. Music is subjective and I don’t think the OP needs to be told that. He’s just looking for closely related songs to the examples he’s provided. You aren’t the only one who’s not apart of the “everybody” category.
