How does lemon juice mixed with water help weight loss and health?

Asked by cliofaye (405points) July 28th, 2011

I read about it recently and i’ve heard of it before and have started drinking lemon water because I’m a health nut. I was curious about it though. What makes it work?

This sounds like an old wife’s tail to me, it can help you lose weight if you do it instead of drinking cola, but other than that I cant see how it would work.

[Waits to see if this has any merit]

I think what it mainly does is substitute a non-caloric drink (that tastes pretty good) with other drinks such as soda, or juice (which tends to have a lot of sugar) or fruity drinks such as Koolaid or Gatorade which also usually have a lot of sugar and/or calories.

The lemon juice also adds a boost of vitamin C, which your body needs.

I don’t think the lemon water actually makes you lose weight per se, it just gives you something healthy to drink instead of eating or drinking something else that is less healthy.

I think the lemon flavor also gives you more of a sense of satisfaction, because it tastes good, rather than just plain water, which a lot of people never drink.

It doesn’t.

Less Calories in vs. More Calories out every day = weight loss.

@Kardamom and @poisonedantidote,i heard that it just absorbs the sugar in your body but i wasn’t sure.

Lemon juice alkalizes your body, which is always good. Try starting your day with a large glass of water spiked with lemon juice. It’ll make you feel pretty good.

@cliofaye I’m not sure how it would be scientifically possible for lemon juice to absorb sugar. Maybe one of our scientists will pop over to this thread and explain it to all of us.

Great question btw.

Many people find a glass of cold water with a T of cider vinegar equally refreshing. It fills up the hole just as efficiently as a hot fudge sundae.

@Facade

“Lemon juice alkalizes your body, which is always good”

How does it do that when it’s an acid?

And why would “alkalinizing your body” be good?

A good quote on this topic-
“Anyone who tells you that certain foods or supplements make your stomach or blood acidic does not understand nutrition.”

Some more scientific information.
