Meta Question

Not many use the chat. If you have chatted in the past - what is different about this one? What would you improve?

Asked by _zen_ (7857points) August 3rd, 2011

Or is it just the “redundancy” of being able to post in a thread – especially in Meta and Social – the way you would in chat anyway?

Or is because of the lurve? Do you feel you are wasting time in chat without getting lurve for it? ~

In any event, I’d like to be able to “peek” in and read the discussion without actually entering. I don’t know if this is possible. Once you’re in – you are seen and have to go through the whole ritual of small talk and greetings – and sometimes you don’t feel like it – but if there were a window on the conversation – we could decide whether to jump in or not.

Probably a dumb idea.

To be honest, I just forget about it. When I do remember and check who’s there, I have no idea who the users are, most of the time. When I see users I know and I join, I do have the best time.

Never been to chat, but I do like the idea of seeing the dialog before joining in. I’m shy.;-)

Okay, I went to chat…..Veddy In-ter-rest-ting!
Yeah! I’m goin back.:D

Can’t type fast enough. I have asked if I could lurk, though and did.

I used to use the chat all the time but then it just died and no one was ever there, I’ve not been in a while so may need to have a peek in some time soon to see of the party has gotten started again.

If you enter chat, then leave to go back to the questions, the chat rooms would still list you as being inside until you leave Fluther.
There is a bit of lag in the rooms.
Honestly, I haven’t found a compelling conversation while I was in chat.

I only chat on the weekend when I’m working at the hospital, and therefore usually bored. Otherwise, I’m usually on my little netbook that doesn’t even handle a chat room well. The questions are, as many have noted, chat-like enough.

I went into chat once (and only once) there were 3 users and no one said anything. Even after I said hello then hello is anyone actually here? I think that they parked themselves in the chat room waiting for someone to show up and then wandered away from the computer. That, or they saw it was me and piped up hoping I’d go away lol.

@tranquilsea I’ve noticed that if people leave chat by closing the window or clicking elsewhere, rather than hitting the link that says “Leave Chat” (or something), it leaves them logged in for a bit. Did those people happen to all leave (idle) at the same time? Sometimes I log into the chat just to clear out the people who have been left logged in.

tranquilsea's avatar

@incendiary_dan From what I can remember they weren’t idle they were just unresponsive. I even sent one of the people a PM to see if they were really wanting to be in the chat room and I never got a reply.

When the chat was active most of us regular users were on AIM too. So I would be on AIM with Allie (or others) and then someone would get Allie on AIM so we would just move everyone would move over for a group chat to the fluther chat. So when people stopped by it was active. There used to be a solid group in chat. When I look in there now none of the names are familiar.

The discussion in the Q&As is more interesting.

I liked the old chat better; from a few years ago.

RareDenver's avatar

@Jude campfire? I never liked that

Jude's avatar

I liked the crew back then. :)

RareDenver's avatar

@Jude I didn’t like the functionality especially that it had a fairly low limit of people allowed in at one time, the room would often be full

I quite like Fluther chat, and yeah. That option of being able to see the discussion before entering the room officially would be pretty cool.

I use Fluther chat fairly regularly, every couple weeks or so, and I always have a great time. The thing is now there are so many Jellies on Facebook and in various conclaves there that 3 places to meet up with the same people is a bit redundant.

The peek a boo window would be cool, I guess. I’d really like more font options to distinguish one user’s text from another.

The mods do have a place to see the transcripts. It isn’t live but you can keep refreshing it. And keeping it private is for the best. I consider the chat to be like a telephone call. If someone is listening in I would like to know about it.

98% of the time I go in there it’s nothing but silly nonsense (as opposed to serious nonsense).

It’s often hard to believe the people chatting are the same ones that post in Fluther threads…35 year old’s that sound like they’re impersonating their 13 year old siblings.

Dude! That was so FAIL, lulz!!!111
