Travelling Jellies, can you recommend for me some sites to peruse to find great air fares to far way places?

Asked by JilltheTooth (19787points) August 4th, 2011

I’d love to know your faves, things like Expedia, Travelocity damn, I love that gnome! Kayak etc. Tell me about some of which I’ve never heard, what are your preferences and why? Feeling an urge to run away, I am!

Travelzoo sends me some pretty sweet deals (not that I’ve taken advantage of any of them yet).

Orbitz is another. I don’t have a favorite but usually cruise a few before deciding to book.

kayak. That site lets you compare other sites for fares.

I like kayak.com and www.bt-store.com. You might also try student travel websites—some even have deals for non-students.

www.mobissimo.com – by far the best for international travel. I always use it when I fly to my summer homes in Madrid and Jamaica, or my winter homes in Whistler and St. Anton.

If you are going to use a wholesale booking agent like Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, or priceline, PLEASE do not be a fussy hotel guest, and don’t expect the ocean view or the best rooms in the house. You are paying a discounted price. Also, if you are pissed off at a mistake that the wholesaler made, and it’s not the fault of the person at the front desk. Please don’t take it out on them. If you need special accommodations, you should call the hotel directly with plenty of time ahead to make sure your needs can be met. Also, take hotel descriptions you find on wholesale websites with a big bucket of salt. If you have questions, call the hotel directly. Expedia, Priceline, etc. lie lie lie about everything. Make sure you compare prices with the hotel’s actual prices too. Quite often, (and I see it with Expedia the most) the “deal” prices are actually more than if you booked with the hotel itself.
Also, if you book through one of these websites, you are paying that company, not the hotel. The hotel itself can’t refund you. If you need to cancel, do it plenty of time in advance, and cancel with the company you booked with.

Also, please don’t assume you are entitled to ANYTHING.

OK… There’s my rant.

(I work at a hotel, in case you didn’t know)

Vayama.com and StudentUniverse.com both worked for me – low prices and OK flight times. Vayama saved me over $200 for my last trip to Vancouver in early summer (over all the other sites mentioned above). For the latter, they really do check your enrollment as a student or your faculty status but it’s a one-time thing; the int’l flight prices are a good bit less than other sites but your selection of flights may be fewer

Thanks, guys, it’s good to have some I’ve never heard of. @FluffyChicken , I appreciate your concern for hotel workers everywhere, but I was asking about air fares only.
