Meta Question

Does anyone else suffer performance anxiety when it comes to listing Fluther topics?

Asked by Blueroses (18256points) August 17th, 2011

I’ve thought of a question, worded it how I want, decided on the category and whether to post it to Facebook… all is good in the world. Until.

Getting to the topics, I freeze. Can’t think of a damned thing. The things I do think of are not valid topics. Is there hope for me? Tips or tricks? Please tell me this happens to everyone sometimes.

I do that sometimes and usually end up typing in silly topics that are either nonsensical or too long, and they get removed, LOL.

I think my “manic killing spree” topic was left up though… heehee.

What she ^ ^ ^ said, I trend toward the silly and dumb in topic choice. If this was my question, I’d probably put down “why am I such a lamebrain when it comes to topics” as a topic.

You can always ask me. :)
I usually don’t have trouble with them now, but I did when I was a new-ish jelly. Obviously, in the course of my job, I’ve had a lot of dealings with topics and am much more comfortable with them these days.

Nah, I really don’t care about it too much now. The spelling policy use to kill me. Especially when I would be typing things late at night and being tired my fingers would become dyslexic or simply lazy and miss typing a few letters or totally forget how to spell a word. I don’t have firefox so I don’t have spell check.

Yes, you are not alone in feeling that way about Fluther topics. I wonder if there is much point to them anyway.

@flutherother We use the topics, combined with your activity on the site, to direct questions to appropriate members. It’s a huge part of our question matching algorithm.

I want to start adding the topic: “Please don’t remove my topics”, LOL.

smilingheart1's avatar

I don’t really “get” how to add the topics. Help me?

flutherother's avatar

@augustlan Thanks, I wasn’t aware of that.

I totally understand why the topics are important and why it doesn’t work to make up your own, but when it comes right down to it, it’s like a test I can’t pass… whatever my question is about, my mind jumps to random, unrelated things: grasshopper, banana bread, dress shoes, trashcan, Republican, dandelion…

Argh!

It’s OK, Sweetie, we have a group, we can help. We meet Tuesday evenings in the VFW hall right after the dog training class lets out.

You don’t need to add fifty. I usually just add one. Fluther if it is Meta. A simple food, computer, economy, or relationship should do the trick.

I have no problem with it, I usually put some key words from the text of the detailed part of the question.
By the way, I think that they are not widely read…, I sometimes put one totally unrelated topic in it and I get no comments on it.

I just think if I were to do a search for this question, what would I use?

And then I add a whole lot of other nonsensical stuff.

@smilingheart1 When you write a question, there is a field for entering custom topics that you feel are appropriate to the question. For example, if you question is Why am I taller than every other member of my family?, you might want to have topics such as “height”, “genetics”, etc. Whatever topic you want to add, you simply write it in the topics field provided.

@smilingheart1 Or, if you’re talking about adding them to your profile, it’s a little more difficult. You have to hover your mouse over a topic you’d like to add, anywhere you see them (questions, other jellies’ profile pages, or by searching for a topic). Then you’ll see an “add topic” button. Click on that, and it gets added to your profile.

I just type whatever comes into my head and if it isn’t right .. oh well!!! :D

Aethelflaed's avatar

No. I just add one or two obvious ones, and then if it needs more, mods can feel free to add them on. I especially like the really generic ones, like “computers” or “words” or “food”.

FutureMemory's avatar

I enjoy the funny ones. My personal favorite was when I asked a question about masturbating without the use of your hands, and wrote one of the topics as “Look Ma no hands” =P

@FutureMemory. @augustlan, thanks a million for your help!
