Is my laptop fan about to give out on me?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) August 23rd, 2011

I’ve had an HP DV7 Entertainment laptop for about two years now, and I’ve never really had a problem with it.

It’s been running really hot recently, so I bought some air duster and dusted out the fan vents and a nice little puff of dust came out. It started running cooler after that, but every so often, usually right after I boot it up, the fan will make a rapid clicking noise, and it sometimes makes a whirring noise as well.

Does this mean it’s about to crap out on me?

Yuppers, see a tech to swap out the fan, and possibly the heatsink, or buy a matching one on ebay and try it yourself.

@XOIIO yikes… I remember thinking I had a socket problem with my laptop’s power socket once. It turned out to be a non-issue but every place I asked charged $200+ and said that I should expect to pay out the ass for any kind of professional repair on a laptop. Is this necessarily true for replacing a fan and/or heatsink?

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard As a tech myself, and ahving worked in various stores, they milk as much as they can out of you. For $200 you could buy the whole motherboard on ebay. Buy the right apart online, and do it yourself, you can probably find image or even video guides on how to do it for your pc specifically.

@XOIIO right-o. I suppose that will be my course of action, should these shenanigans continue. Thank you, sir.
