Portable hard drive recommendation (mac-compatible)

Asked by efritz (3255points) August 29th, 2011

I’m working on a year-long animation project, so I need a portable hard drive that is dependable, easy to access and use, and does NOT BREAK DOWN. I hear SeaGate is really nice but tends to fail, and Lacie is sturdy but expensive. I have a WesternDigital external that doesn’t let me alter my backups.

Any recommendations?

If you want something durable laCie firewire drives are the best.

How about My Book I have a 2TP size My Book but I think that you can one with 5TB. Very simple to set up and use. I’ve have mine for 2 years with no problems.

I would buy a seagate drive rather than a western digital one. WD tends to track behind their competition in development and consistently beats up their suppliers for decreased pricing which in the end means a less quality product for the end customer. I’m not terribly familiar with La Cie as a company. All of the companies offer SCSI drives which will be compatible with MAC.

Buy two hard drives. A backup of the backup. Pros do all the time, and for a year-long Animation project, you should consider no less.
