So the second largest owner of Fox "News" is up on rape charges in Spain, will that news air on Fox News?

Asked by tedd (14078points) September 14th, 2011

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the Saudi crown princes, is the second largest owner of News Corp (Rupert Murdochs company) and hence second largest owner of Fox News. He is being charged in Spain with the rape of a young model back on 2008. He is one of the richest men on the planet (#26 in Forbes Magazine last year), and also owns a huge chunk of Citigroup. This has got to be at least as big of news as former IMF president Strauss-Kahn being accused of rape several months ago.

A few years ago Fox News did a report about a seedy benefactor who owned a group called the Kingdom Foundation, who were supporting the “Ground Zero Mosque” and supposedly had connections to terrorist groups. Fox never said the name of the benefactor, because as it turns out the benefactor was Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the second largest owner of Fox News. It led the Daily Show to make a sketch (Is Fox News Evil or Stupid??) and me to post the same question here…... http://www.fluther.com/94755/as-asked-on-daily-show-last-night-is-fox-news-stupid/ .

My question is this. This is big news. Do you think it airs on Fox News, or do they ignore it since the person in question owns them?

(worth noting I don’t watch Fox News, so I do not know if this has run already)

If it is anything like the phone hacking scandal they will do a small segment and make him look like a victim. I wish that I was joking.

I think they will give it minute coverage, and possibly try to avoid revealing his ties to Fox.

Don’t get me wrong – I am in no way a Fox “news” fan. However, my initial reaction is: this is a case of someone being accused of rape. Period. I’m having a difficult time seeing why this would be such huge news. NOTE: I am also not downplaying rape. I’m just having trying to see why alleged rape by a large owner of News Corp is any bigger news than the alleged rape by a manager of the local 7/11.

@tom_g The former IMF president lost his job and spent days in a US jail thanks to a rape accusation.

He has since been vindicated as the accusers story was full of holes. But all it took was the accusation, and his face was plastered across news agencies worldwide. Bin Talal is easily as big a global figure as Strauss-Kahn. Hell they might both someday lead their respective countries. Think of it as if…. as if George W Bush had been accused of Rape back in the 80’s.

@tedd – I’m still not following. So, a high-profile person lost his job because of a rape accusation. That sounds pretty awful. Are we now suggesting that similar treatment be applied to other high-profile people to maintain consistency?

zensky's avatar

Well, they are fair and balanced.

jrpowell's avatar

@tom_g :: It isn’t about the consistency of the punishment. It is about Fox News ignoring it when their buddy does it. A few months ago they went nuts over someone they don’t like doing something similar.

tom_g's avatar

@johnpowell – Ok. I get that (consistency in reporting a similar rape accusation) I guess. Still seems like a big distraction to me. I don’t want news organizations going “nuts” over any single rape accusation, and this applies to the one in question. Fox “news” could not be any more inconsistent, hypocritical, or partisan. I don’t think it’s possible. Taking this rape accusation seriously wouldn’t change that.

Innocent til proven guilty?

jrpowell's avatar

@tom_g :: I agree. I wish we had the media blackout rules some European countries have. It is the job of a jury to determine your innocence or guilt. Once they do then let the media do it’s thing.

jrpowell's avatar

@bkcunningham :: They did the same with the phone hacking thing. Toss up a hidden article on the website so people like you can link to it. The article isn’t linked to on the main page of Fox News and can only be found by searching.

But the website is irrelevant. The question is how the cover it on TV. My money is on “not much”.

bkcunningham's avatar

”...so people like you can link to it.” What does that mean?

tom_g's avatar

I can’t believe I’m put in the position here to defend Fox “news”.

@johnpowell – That article appears on www.foxnews.com for me without having to do any searching. To be honest, it’s about where I would like something like that to appear. The rest of the crap “news” stories that litter that shit website is another story…

Lol! Objective Win @tom_g. It hurts, but it builds character.

Here’s what I see

tedd's avatar

The Fox News website showing it, and it’s prominence on said website for that matter, are interesting…

But my main question was wondering about whether the actual TV network would air something about it, and whether it would be an “appropriate” level of coverage for such an important story.

bkcunningham's avatar

Perhaps I’m missing the story on CNN and MSNBC’s websites, but Fox is the only major source I see for the story.

CNN & MSNBC does the same thing in regards to hiding or not reporting a story.

Whenever a black man, or a Hispanic commits a violent crime, like the recent black man that killed like 13 kids, or the flash-mob robberies that consisted of black teens, they would hide, or not cover the story on their website, and remove all the pictures of the offenders, but if you take a look at foxnews, they have the story on the front page with all the pictures. After the story dies down, they publish it, but hide it.

And then it goes in reverse, when a white man kills someone, CNN & MSNBC has it plastered all over the news with detailed pictures.

tedd's avatar

@woken How utterly false, on both counts. I’ve never known Fox, CNN, or MSNBC to hide stories of murder based on race or any other information. Unfortunately to be worthy of their attention it has to be a pretty big news deal, as in a huge number of people killed, or someone famous who did it. The only way you see it get political is when the news agency goes out of their way to point out that the offender has some kind of connection to someone famous they don’t like. If they had to spend all their time reporting violent crimes and homicides, that’s all that would be on them.

woken's avatar

@tedd,

It’s not false, because my friend made a massive thread to prove it on another forum. I’ll be happy to show you an example the next time a minority commits a crime.

tom_g's avatar

@woken – Invite your “friend” to join fluther so he can justify his claims. You, sir, have not.

woken's avatar

@tom_g,

Wait for the next news worthy minority killing spree, and I’ll start a new thread so you can see the time stamps.
