What choice did Sophie make in the film "Sophie's Choice" ?

Kind of a direct question. I was wondering what her choice in the movie ? Was it choosing her kids or the choice she had to kill herself ?

No just a question :) How do you think her life would have been differently if she chose one of her kids ? Because I remember she had a hard time choosing so they took both?

I kind of feel that the choice to choose one of her kids was the driving force for her to commit suicide in the end. It was an escape for her as she somewhat comes to terms with that she’ll never be able to overcome her grief nor guilt from choosing a child of hers to die. So the choice in my opinion is the child one. In essence it was the only choice that mattered to her even though there really wasn’t a choice she could make to sway the outcome…
Now that I wrote all that out, I’m now thinking that perhaps the choice was either try to find a new beginning to escape her past and thus abandoning the memory of her children, or reunite with her children in a better place, hopefully.

Now that I know that, I guess I will never watch the movie now. That is way too depressing.

The main reason to watch the film is because Meryl Streep is a fantastic actress and this is one of the best examples of why she is so regarded.

The thought of having to make that choice is horrifying.
