Why do people look for followers on various websites that allow users to add personal information?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37350points) September 24th, 2011

I have a blog that I use only for sharing very personal information, so only a very few friends know about it. It gets a few odd hits from someone searching Google. Very few. I personally don’t care about the number of hits it gets.

I also don’t care how many people are my friends on Facebook.

Why do some people look for as many followers as they can get?

Loneliness.

Boredom.

Under the false impression they have something important to share with the world at large.

I assume they are in high school and it is some sort of contest. When I was in high school we measured our value with notches on the headboard.

Because these social sites made the mistake of referring to contacts as “friends”.

My guess is that they hope, one day, to either earn money or gain fame from being themselves.
