Can somebody help me with my reccomendation dilemma?

Asked by icehky06 (896points) September 25th, 2011

I’m a senior in high school getting all geared up for the college application process which first begins with the teacher recommendation. I plan to major in Biology at college so I plan on asking my anatomy teacher for a recommendation and my math teacher from last year. Anatomy I have an A and my grade last year in math was a D (I know, I know). Now, I plan on asking one teacher that I struggled with, saw after school, emailed, etc; my math teacher is a great candidate.

My dilemma is the fact I do not want him lying on my recommendation expressing how I am a worthy student to attend __ university. I never outweighed anyone in the class but he knows I worked my butt off in that class. Now my question is; should I have him write the recommendation? If yes; I plan on typing him up something addressing my feelings about last years class before I permanently ask him. What should I say? I’m so scared!

‘If he knows you worked hard and you’re on good terms with him, go for it, not all recommendations have to come from a class you aced. They come from teachers you showed a good work ethic and dedication to.

If you got a D, you can’t ask for a recommendation. A recommendation usually means you excelled in a subject and had great communication skills with. Bottom line, say you got the D and raised it to a B, that’s worthy. But if you asked me and I was your teacher, I’d kind of feel awkward. For me a D indicates you don’t really understand the material. Don’t cut corners in the field of Biology. The good thing is math is just part of biology.

I had a C in pre calc, I asked that math teacher for a letter of recommendation. I got into USMA. Though it probably did help that I was getting an A in Calculus.

ask HIM if he would be a good candidate to write the letter. Ask him if he thinks, considering your grade, he could write a good letter, or if you would be better off getting the letter from someone who gave you a better grade. Tell him why you thought of him, but tell him what you told us. he will be honest with you and appreciate your honesty as well.

I would never, ever, under any circumstances ask someone who thought I did poor work to give me a recommendation. Never. It’s self-defeating. I don’t care how hard you tried. In fact, that makes it worse. This guy worked his ass off and still got a D? You’ve got to be kidding. I do want to touch him with a ten-foot pole.

On the other hand, if you want to be honest about your logic skills, you should ask him. Do you belong in a biology program when you have serious deficits at a specific and important skill? If this is a mistake, you should work to correct it and show you have mastered the material after all.

The grade will be on your transcript, so everyone will see the truth about that whether or not your teacher tells them. But I fail to see how you could turn a negative like that into a positive. The fact that you would even consider using him as a reference would show me you have poor judgment.

I hire people. I see recommendations. I know how to read between the lines. I also write recommendations. I won’t write one for someone I’m not going to write a good one for. I strongly advise against this idea.

@icehky06 Have you considered asking another teacher in the field of science? Or perhaps just in a class where you really excelled? I think those would be better options than the D grade teacher.
